Stolen Sled on Buff Pass!!!

Can't believe how people think that a broken down sled becomes thiers.
I had broken down sled on main trail at Buff Pass. Went to retrieve it this summer. ITS GONE! Checked with forest service. They don't have it. But they know the sled. I'm sure alot of you have seen it last season. LOL it was on main trail across from power lines at top by radio tower. Anybody has any info. That would be greatly appreciated!
This is why snowmobilers get a bad reputation. If it's not yours don't take it!!
Ok done venting..

So it broke down on a main trail in the winter and you waited until summer to retreive it? (And you posted about it in October, seems kinda goofy)
Unless there's more to the story, that's just dumb! Would be like leaving it on a street corner with the key in it and not expect it to get stolen.
Why couldn't you retreive the sled in a timely manner? If it broke on a trail, guessing it was still in one piece (not wadded up in a gully or something). Did you walk out? If you rode out w/ someone, why not tow it out right then and there, or come back for it with another machine?

A buddy found an "abandoned" sled up outside of Aspen a few years ago in the spring time, while he was up 4 wheeling. It was no beauty, but it pulled over and fired on ether. Wasn't wrecked (it was beat up but not the reason it was sitting there). He called the FS and they acknowledged the sled and told him if he wanted it to go get it! Said it was on their land and it would save them a trip up to haul it off.

Guess I wouldn't say it was stolen if you left it there longer than a reasonable period of time.
Still sucks you lost your sled, but to be expected.

Guys if this happens to you this winter post here on SW that you need help. There are plenty of us that will help you get it out. Leaving a sled only gives greenies more ammo....

And is see this was posted last Feb,

Nice to see the powder pics.
But now I have to vent a little.... I have a totaled sled up on Buff pass. And I know you guys have seen it couple times. Just have not been able to retrieve it. I was up once only 1 week after I left it there. It was already scavenged! What is wrong with the morrals of our fellow riders?? Now i hear that all is left is the seat leaning against a pole. (probably to mark it to finish taking what they can.) It's amazing how little people care. I know that it is completley burried now! So I guess you cant steal anymore off it!!
Bottom Line people!!
IF IT'S NOT YOURS DON'T TAKE IT YOU FREEKN THEIFS!!! AND YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!

Ok done venting.... Looking forward to riding some of that DEEP POWDEDR!
Got new sled now.

Now it makes more sense.

sled left behind

I blew the crank on both of my sleds last year. I was able to get the first one out with much dificultly. The secound one I had to leave. 10 pm and still miles from are trucks, we left it behind. Was not able to retrieve it the next day do to trucks going down on the way. I was able to get the boys together and go up on th third day to retrieve it, all parts and pieces still there. This sled had lots of goodies to take, but no one touched it they did not even open the hood. If you get your sled out quickly it should be fine.

I posted some years ago about a sled that was completly wasted and left on the mountian. I was given a lot of crap about even asking about it but it was lat summer and no one piked it up. After talking to the fs I was given the name of the owner and retrieved the sled for parts.
If you leave it for months on end it will be gone.

As some one posted just ask for help, I asked about my sled I left behind and was offerd help right off.

Not every one is a bag of $hit.

Still sorry to hear your sled was Taken, that does blow.

Yes,, it was there a long time.. I had trouble getting it. went back to retrieve it. was burried. couldn't find it. So i figured I would wait til snow melted. Couldn't get upm there til July. Besides shouldn't matter how long it was there. You don't take things that are not yours! Right?

The sled was trashed! Could not be towed out. whole right side was ripped off. This is what I'm talking about. Just because someone leaves a sled on the mountain cause of whatever reason. doesn't give anyone the right to just take it. I communicated with forest service about the issues. They said it was fine to get it later when snow was gone. Sorry I don't have the resources like some of you guys do. Let me ask you guys. So your firts reaction to stranded sled is to steal it? Or at least take what parts you can?

Nobody here is advocating stealing. Posting about this in October was misleading without mentioning that it was stripped right afterwards.

I wasn't the only one this year. I talked to the police. And he said another guy got his taken too. So just for my information? what is the time frame that a sled left on the mountain, can I take it for my own? Thats the Dumbest thing I have heard. So it's my own fault it's stolen?

There is an abandonment law in Colorado and while I sympathise with you losing your sled, there are reasonable time limits. If you left your car besides a forest service road for 6 months would you expect it to be there when you went for it? Now somebody taking parts right away is of course wrong. But I would suspect a forest cleaning effort removed the remains to a landfill.

Next time ask for help and I am very sure one of us will help.

Dude, seriously, relax. It is BS that it got stripped right away. BUT........... if it was just a pile of crap left in the woods for 6 months after the season is over, most people are going to assume that is is abandoned and may take the initiative to clean up the forest.

I agree with that. Looking at those pics I don't see why it couldn't have been hauled out on a toboggan. Or even call Jason at SST. He has been known to retrieve sleds and haul them to the lot with his SnowCat. You may have had to pay for his diesel but your sled would have made it home to part it out and recover some losses. With the crappy snow we had last season I can't believe it got buried.

Yes , You guys are all right . My bad! I don't have the resourses for a tobogin sled. And it's a leason learned for sure. I didn't have insurance cause of how old it was. I have insurance on new sled this time. I found out from sheriff that if left for 30 days it's considered abandon. But that doesn't make it right. Just upset at the principle behind it.
And as to how it happened: Was carving and fell off throttle stuck wide open, went accross meadow slamed a tree at full speed. Sled was still running. Crazy! I rode it out to main trail on 1 ski. Went back following week. people already stealing stuff off it. My plan of retrieving didn't work. Came back 2 weeks later. was burried. Got 4 to 5 feet snow. couldn't find it.

Sorry for all angry comments. Just sucks! Got new sled so moving on. Can't wait for the snow to pile up!!!
Lets Ride!!

You're a good sport man...didn't mean to upset at anyone with my comment above about insurance...

I just get a kick out of people who purchase 5K-10K toys and then don't have the money to put insurance on them.

I know that's not the case here...it just always blows my mind...people will make money for what they WANT alot of times but not what they NEED;)

OK, off my soap box now:face-icon-small-coo

I AGREE...SNOW SNOW SNOW SNOW SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
