Stock Apex or RX1 Turbo?

I'm hoping that you guys can help me out with a few questions.

I'm currently in the market looking for my first mountain sled. I've been a flatland rider my whole life riding in the NY hills/trails. Now that I'm closer to Colorado than NY, I'm going to ride in the deep pow...and looking forward to it. I'm coming off a nearly 200hp Thundercat 121".

I see that there are several RX1 turbo'd sleds in my price range in the Snowest forums. I've also seen a few 07 Apex's for about 7 g's too. I know the RX1's are heavy bastages but with a turbo how are they? IIRC, the RX1 and the Thundercat (dry weight 583lbs) are similar in dry weight. Am I crazy for considering one as my first mountain sled? I'm 6'2", 220lbs with no gear and I like to ride aggressively. I'm not a crazy SOB but I do like having power. Since I've never rode in the mountains, I'm not sure what I'll enjoy but I think I will like hillclimbing for sure.

How are the rear mounted turbo kits? Do back braces come with these RX1's? I know I'll spend a lot of time digging out so I'll need one.

There is not a lot weight difference between the 2.The thing about buying the RX-1 is it has the turbo and most times, some people have all ready put some lite weight stuff on them. All you really have to do is put the ride forward kit on the you have the same steering as an apex

As long as the sled has a a\f gauge i would say go for it and watch your gauges to make sure everything is good to go.Make any adjustments as needed while riding whether it be in the carbs or ride of the sled. I would go with the rx1 with a turbo already on it over the apex. Just get the rider forward kit and call it good. Set it up the way you want it and be happy and save quite a bit of money. My .02

Where can I find the rider forward kit??? Thanks..:D

Wildchild on here builds the rider forward kit. Doo_man on TY has one for sale right now as well.

Also my inclination would be towards the RX1. Once they are set up they need very little if any adjustments so if you get one that somebody who knows what they are doing has set up already all you will have to do is turn the key.

I've had both .....I have more fun on my old 04rx1 Warrior as I ever did on my Apex . But it's highly modded out and setup pretty well , and quite a bit lighter than the Apex was .

Advantage Apex for fuel injection. My RX-1 Turbo was sometimes a b!tch to get started sometimes after an off camber stick. Iffy sometimes to get it started.

Also with EFI you have a piggy back system to over ride the factory computer.Guess what can happen if that go's for sh!t.They don't rub very well.So they all have the good and bad points' just one is a cheaper way to go then the other.I have a turbo RX-1 and love it.:beer;:beer;:beer;:beer;

Going from a 200 hp t cat to a Mountain RX1 turbo is like going from a putty cat to having tiger by the tail .
If you get a well set up sled there should be very minimal wrenching .
Buying mod sleds is about as scary as getting married, if you didn't build it you will never know . Have it checked out by a reputable shop.
Is it a good first Mountain sled?
Depends on your fitness level and Attitude and who you ride with to learn riding the mountains . Not a good place to f----up.

I appreciate all the responses. I agree with powdermuncher's statement that "if you don't build it you will never know" how well it was put together. I guess that's the scariest part for me. I don't want to get someone else's headache.

0007 - shoot me some details/pics of your RX1 for sale. You can reach me at thebigtman@gmail.com BTW, where is the sled located?

If you are plannin on riding in CO make sure you sled is set up for CO riding. I've seen people buy turbo sleds out of state and the run chitty out here. You will end up spending $$$ just to make it run well.

Who ever did the install is important. Make sure it's a reliable well-known shop close to the area you ride.

I have an 05 RX1 MCXpress Turbo and an 06 Apex MCXpress Turbo for sale right now. All set up by www.haboost.com. PM if you are interested.

Just my opinion

Alright i know this will piss some yamaha guys off but it sounds like you are about to make the same mistake that i made last year. I thought that the apex would be a great mountain sled. Long track good power, but i was way wrong. unless you are just going to go straight up a really big hill it is not a good mountain seld. If you enjoy boondoking then you will be very unhappy with this sled. I am 6'3 200lbs and thought that i was big enough to through this thing around but that is just not true. So if you are ever going to ride with anyone else that doesnt have an apex they will run circles around you and hate you for how much they have to dig that tub out of its huge trenches. I already sold mine and bought a 08 RMK.

Like i said this is going to make people come out of the wood works and attack me but i wish that someone would have told me this before i spent 11k

Thanks for admitting your not a very skilled rider. An apex will ride with anything anyday, stock or not. It wont get the highmark but will go anywhere any other sled will.

I am not a very skilled rider but can hang with most of them. Yeah there will be people that will highmark or carve circles better than you. If you are having fun who cares. There are always better riders, better sleds... blah blah blah.

Anyhow... My dad can beat up your dad... take that :)

HA, one better

My MOM can beat up your dad, and she rides...

I couldn't resist.

I bought a custom 1997 Honda Valkyrie two summers ago, and even though the bike was built well by a knowledgeable builder/rider/owner he couldn't tell me everything there was to know about the bike the afternoon I bought it, and of course being custom, something f-d up on me later on down the line and I had to spend some dollars and lots of time to repair the starter clutch assy (which is inside the tranny case (which is attached to the engine, which is part of the frame)).

If it's custom, it's somebody else's baby and they're the only ones that are going to know that sled, so I'd try to buy one local to your area so that you will have someone to fall back on when it comes time to work on this thing, at least for information if nothing else.
