Stock 08 D8 Can has a rattle? Normal, or known issue?

I searched but did not find anything on this subject (search on here ain't the best though).

Tonight I removed the stock can from my 08 D8 to open up the chain case so I could drain the oil and check the gearing (20x41). When I got the can out, it had a very loud rattle in it. VERY loud, like a loose baffle.

Anyone heard of this happening? Sled only has less than 1K miles on it, only a couple hundred of those put on by me.

My plan is to replace the stock exhaust, but I wanted to wait to put any mods on it until I have the update broke in and working right. I don't want to be denied warranty on the engine update because I changed the exhaust to an SLP single, and I don't want to be chasing clutching issues vs. engine issues.

Also if I ever sell the sled I would like to be able to put the stock exhaust back on..

Do you think Polaris owes me a new stock can? Will a stock can off an 08 700 work? It looks a lot different. Any input appreciated! Planning on riding it Wednesday...

Bring it to your dealer, theey'll give you a replacement. Ask for an SLP can. Had that happen, and it is common. Baffles are junked out.

It's been a known problem for 3 years now. :( Just another quality control control issue that Polaris refuses to do anything about. Why would you continue to manufacture a piece that is known to be bad  And we wonder why our sleds are so expensive.

It will depend on your dealer to a certain extent, they may tell you it's out of warranty. Approach it from the standpoint that your sled is out of warranty but this defect falls under the implied warranty in US law.
The baffle was an issue on a lot of 08's haven't seen it reported since. US Warranty falls under the Moss Magnusson Act-the act covers direct warranty, i.e. the kind you get for one or two years in writing. It also covers Implied Warranty, unwritten-basically mfct's defects are covered exclusive of the age of the sled. Mfct's do a recall on serious issues, (especially safety ones) but normally don't on minor ones with a low incidence. Google Moss Magnusson implied warranty for more info.

If it is still under warranty they should replace it. I went through 2 of them on my 08. One of them separated to the point the sled would not even run.

Wow, thanks people, I thought I heard about this problem somewhere on snowest forums, but the search on the forums is not very powerful (or maybe I need to learn how to use it better). My dealer is pretty decent, so I will see what they will do, but I just purchased the sled used last spring. The engine just had the update (I would think they would have noticed the rattle then...), so the engine itself is under the extended warranty.

If I get them to replace it with an SLP can instead of a stock can, will that SLP can work with the SLP pipe without having to buy a new can?

Yes sir it will match right up and before you buy the can get ahold of me cuz i know where a pipe and can are for a d8. I was gonna do one but there is mixed emotions if it really helps out or not.

I want the dealer to warranty it which would be no $$ cost to me, then I will run it through the break-in period for the update with stock exhaust (or stock pipe with SLP can if they will go that route). I actually have a used aftermarket pipe & can I picked up but I don't want to volunteer that info to the dealer and have them say to just put it on and think they can avoid the warranty issue at my expense, and I don't want to have to reclutch or have any engine issues that they could try to blame on the exhaust... plus I want to be able to put it back to stock whenever I sell it. Can't do that without a good can.

Here is the warranty page out of my Assault manual. I hope this helps.
It might help, it may be a bit of a stretch to have the emissions warranty cover the exhaust can, but if the dealer can get reimbursed from Polaris they should cover it in my opinion. I will find out tomorrow if I don't get too busy to get over to the dealership. I will see what they offer to do the first visit anyway.

Dealer said they have to check with Polaris to see if they will cover it. Should hear back from them tomorrow. He said that if they will cover it, they can apply the warranty credit towards an SLP can instead.

They also told me not to run it this way.

We were going to go sledding tomorrow, mostly to get some miles on the new updated motor. I know someone who might have a stock take-off can I might be able to borrow... if not I guess I have to throw the aftermarket exhaust on there and hope for the best.

EDIT: I have a stock take-off 08 700 Dragon can, from wife's sled, but it looks really different... any chance it would work right? I kinda doubt it, grasping at straws...
