Aspercreme or Sportscreme seems to work. Not a long term solution (doesn't last for more than an hour) but it does bring relief.

Use ice instead of heat, that will reduce inflammation. Ibuprofen will help to reduce it as well. Then, go see a chiropractor!

Two Ibuprofen and one extra-strength Tylenol, Soma is an excellent muscle relaxant, IMO the only thing a chiropractor will do is buy another BMW with your money. Physical therapy may also help. I am extremely allergic to bee stings and received one on the back of my neck in the fall of 2009, I had the stiffest neck and for the first time in my live really bad headaches for 6 months, the Soma was the only thing that helped. You can also still function with Soma.

A few years ago I had neck pain that was unbearable. By 8 or 9 PM my neck couldn't hold my head up anymore. My chiropractor couldn't help it much. Have one really bad disk nearly bone on bone and two marginal either side of it.

I don't have any pain anymore. Here is how I fixed it.

Walgreens liquid capsaicin This stuff is mean, will burn the pain out by increasing blood flow to sore muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Second thing is neck exercise from a book (3 Minutes to a Pain-Free Life) by Dr. Joseph Weisburg http://www.walmart.com/search/searc...Life&ic=48_0&Find=Find&search_constraint=3920

The exercise I do are tilt head sideways left and right and try touch your ear to top of your shoulder, hold 30 seconds. The Doctors theory of all the movements is range of motion sort of pumps fluid into our joints.

The two approach's run about $20 total and you can heal yourself. With the pain killers you will band aid the pain and do more damage while also damaging liver and kidneys eventually if you haven't already.

Good Luck

I have been going through the same issue. I went to a chiropractor first but wasn't helping completely. He referred me to a physical theropist. At PT they started doing a ultra-sound. Now I'm on to doing isometrics. Things are getting lots better just in time for the season.
