steering questions

so i finally got enough snow to take out my 2012 mtx 162 with the mpi stage 1 s/c. Plenty of power but it was very hard to steer. I know some of that is inherent with the nytro and the front end weight, but i am interested to know what everyone is doing to make it steer a little lighter, besides putting on a new front end. It was very difficult to steer, very heavy. Now keep in mind that i am new to the mountains and am used to being on trails back east, so im sure alot of this is rider error. Just wondering what shock settings and strap settings i need to be at. i am approx 215 lbs fully clothed. Everything on the sled is stock except for the super. Thanks for any info.

In general, you want to increase the front track shock pressure to take weight off the skis and loosen the limiter strap. From what I have seen, most people are running 65-75lbs in the ski shocks, around 90lbs in the front skid shock and the rear skid depends on rider weight but maybe around 130-150lbs. Also make adjustments in 5lb increments. Good luck.

Different skis will help also. The stock MTX ski has a very deep keel, which is one reason why they hold a side hill so well. However the deep keel also increases the steering effort in firmer spring snow.

Agree completely. Stock skis have a deep keel and you have to work for it during slow speed turns.

thanks to everyone. ill try a couple adjustments before i consider a new front end. im thinking that i can improve it a little with a few adjustments on the pressures and strap.

The relocator kit is designed to move the oem Nytro FX, RTX, XTX and MTX steering shaft forward. this helps overcome the "wishy washy" feeling of the nytro steering, by providing a more "traditional" sled's steering angle. This kit moves the oem shaft 6 degrees forward of the original position, which equates to about 5" of forward/upward movement of the handlebars. In addition this kit provides you with a greatly reduced steering radius - it's da bomb in the trees! The kit also replaces the weak and wear prone plastic steering bushing at the bottom with an OFT Racing billet block, and an oilite bushing for a much more stable linkage feel.

The supercharger puts more weight on the deep keel of the skis which is probably what your feeling.

Play with your suspension settings and try to get the most out of what you have before you go and start throwing money at it. I think you'll find you'll be able to tune out a lot of what your feeling.

sorry everyone, i forgot to mention that i already have the relocater on it. it was one of the first things that i did.

The other thing to check is which mounting hole the rear suspension is in. The lower hole will increase ski pressure.

Ya ya ya...my Gen II simmons with the wrong suspension set up on my Apex steers so hard on packed snow it feels like I am going to twist the steering shaft in half. But when it is set up right it is manageable. :face-icon-small-blu

The 11 nytro I just bought has stock skis and the only snow I have had it in is hard junk and it steers pretty easy due to the setup...but I still have some tuning to do to get it where I like it. :face-icon-small-win

You guys think the Gen III's turn easier the the stock. I have Gen III on my Nytro now and was going to go back to stock to try and get easier steering . I think the dual keel on the Gen III's is more agressive then the stock.

Put the sled up on jack-stands in the shop.

Feel the amount of resistance in the steering WITHOUT weight on the skis.
