Steering post on 09d8

You're the 4th person this year that I know of. The fun is just getting started. You have to pull the motor to change it. Mines bent, but I'm going to ride it the rest of the season and change it this summer.

from an earlier post

Just turned on 1400 miles, 5 sets of pistons, 4 mono block cylinders, 3 VR's, 2 ECMs, 1 pipe, 3 pipe temp sensors, one set of reeds. I think that's is? kinda stopped keeping track. Also snapped a chain and snapped the steering post over nothing, if that counts.

Weak point for sure....Was at my dealer today: He had just taken a D8 in. I had to laugh: Had a pair of vice-grips clamped onto the lower part of the post and about 15 wraps of "bailing wire" holding the handle onto the upper part of the post......Dunno how the guy ever made it out? A wobbly setup for sure........

Rolled my '08, don't know how it is still there after reading all the broken ones. Stock risers, bet you guys have 6" or more tagged on them.

I've broke two steering posts on my D7. The dealer took care of the first one for me. The other was from a wreck.

My hat is off to you for getting out with that setup. I did look for any other damage to see what kind of crash it was and didn't see a scratch......I asked the mechanic what happened; said he didn't know, just waiting on word from the insurance company....Good luck.

I changed mine on the 09 D8. Someone else had welded it. I did not have to remove the motor. The bottom of the post drops into a cup style bushing. Below the lever on the bottom of the post. I removed the throttle bodies and turned the steering so I could get a wrench on the bolt in the heim joint and used 18 inches of extensions on my ratchet to unsrew the nut. Luckily it is on the top of the lever. Lifted out the post and dropped the new one in. Really didn't take that long.

What did you replace it with? After market or factory?
The welds spilt on mine so I cleaned up and re-welded it with a small guset to support the top plate. My is a 09 D8. I think the center rod on the 09's goes down below the bushing more than the 08. I have about a 6" riser and do allot of bondocking.
