I got myself in sticky situation last week and figured out a pretty neat trick.
Our group found a new bowl canyon in an area we ride alot. We were all pretty surprised I pooked up the shut and into the upper bowl and too the top of the ridge. Was an awesum pull and everyone made it up. I could see across to the other side of the mountain ridge we were riding from there. I thought we could drop into there too so after we dropped down and looped up to that ridge but it was rocky and blocked. It was a tricky pull to there and there trees now below me. I backed the sled out and had to roll it get it pointed in the right direction. It was steeper then I thought and I almost lost the sled. I got it sorted out but had a delema.
No one could or was willing to get to me unless they hiked and we never hike.
If the sled rolled or took off it was head for the trees with no run out. I needed to get about 30 yards to the right of where I was located to have a shot at clearing the trees. Everyone was watching and tried this. The sled was laying on its side pointed the right direction now. The only thing holding on the slope was the left ski being dug in. If I tipped the sled up right it was going to roll over or head for the trees. The snow as concrete with 12" of very light fluff on top. I started the sled on its side and got it running. I slowly started to tip the sled upright while on it ettting a feel for the tipping point. If it went over before I had any forward momentum I was toast. I reved up the sled and hit the hammer as I started it tipping over. The sled launched across the face and I easily cleared the trees and go over enough to make the run out. Had a unexpected great day as we found fresh powder when we were expecting none. Found a very cool area checking maps to see if it is legal- Too good to be true kinda thing. And figured out a cool way out of a sticky situation on the fly. Never seen anyone try it before. And the down hills were extremely fast and hard even with the fresh on top. Reverse only offered slightly better control but no stopping or even slowing down. Once you were moving your were not stopping unless you got upside down and something hooked.
Was lots of carnage on the afternoon. One XP (Not mine) Bungie cor boy with a crushed foot well and a dragon minus a windshield and gauge pod. Don't worry dad's sled is officially broken in now. Late.
PS. 14th was my best ride of 09 in WA and most guys stayed home because
there was no new snow- SUCKERS!
