Steamboat Lake, Crested Butte??????

I am looking for a new place to ride. I have been to Grand lake, Grand Mesa, Rabbit Ears pass, Cumbres Pass, Togwotee, and the snowies. We like riding out of our cabin/hotel. We are not big into hill climbing, but we do like off trail riding in meadows and searching for untouched powder. Does anyone know about Steamboat lake, or Crested Butte lodging and terrain? We also have some riders who rent so we would need rentals onsite or delivered. Coming from Kansas so we are trying to stay in CO or southern WY. Am I better off sticking with one of the places I have been? Thanks for your input.

Crested Butte there's no ride out cabins that I am aware of (may be wrong, but not sure). It's a short trailer up to the parking area, and Irwin is spectacular riding. The 4m ride is out of Steamboat Lake Outfitters this year, haven't ridden there before but looking forward to it, ride in/ride out.

Where are you from in Kansas?

SLO will have ride from door cabins/rooms.
Will probably be more in line with your type of riding. Haven't personally ridden there yet, but assume its somewhat similar to Rabbit Ears.

CB is a bit more vertical if I remember right.

I think for multiple days you may be better off w/ SLO (steamboat lake outfitters).

Planet Powersports in Steamboat is supposed to do rentals this upcoming season. Don't know if it is by delivery or customer pick-up though. Other than that the next closest place to rent sleds is in Granby.

Don't know about rentals but the riding up at SLO is really sweet. It's kind of like Towgatee in parts big meadows. Try California Park. Best part not a lot of people lots of untouched and massive area

Sure, give away our secrets;)

You might consider South Fork, Cottonwood Pass or Chama NM, but I'm not sure about rentals. I know guys from Garden City who prefer these areas.

SLO rents sleds to registered guests only. Planet will not be renting sleds anymore because the insurance is too expensive. There's a local guy who rents, think his name is Stan and he will deliver to SLO. Also a couple out of Grand Lake rent and deliver in the area.

Yeah, but they'll rent Harleys all Summer long! A Harley is way more expensive than a sled and they are more dangerous too. Some things just don't make sense. They could make way more money renting sleds than Harleys. They just need a good manager. Although the last two they had were pretty easy on the eyes;)

Coming from KS, you can pick up rental sleds on a trailer from Xtreme Rentals in Denver. I think they rent M6 and M8's. That would open up your options.
I remeber looking last yr for friends and their rental rates weren't any higher than the rentals in the mtns.

CB? yawn.

Crested Butte riding sucks.

Too much snow.
Too steep.
Too much digging out.
Too many greenie weenies.
Not enough groomed trails.
Locals are grouchy.
No good tee-shirt shops in CB.
Can't ride from yer hotel.
Too expensive.
Way too far from Denver.
I miss I-70.
My Vail Pass parking pass doesn't work in CB.
Only one place with really good vegi-burgers.
Where do I park my 74 foot RV ?
Can I buy 200octane fuel out there?
Unmarked trails confuse me.
No modular helmet repair shop? forget it.
How do you jet for 14,000ft?
Turbo roost.
How far is Crested Butte from Rabbit Ears?
No fast food?

;-)

Ahh - the things we put up with.

MtnDoo.

It snowed yesterday - many of the mountains were covered fairly solid from 11,500 up. No good pics to speak of, though.

Get on it Corey!!!

We need pictures!!!

Do you know anyone with a cabin where we can lunch at during the day of riding???
If so, let me know so I can stock the place with beer, brats and charcol before the road closes!!!

I only have one good pic of yesterday's snow up at Lake Irwin, and I can't get it up on my FTP server right now. ugh. The tops of Ruby, Owen and Purple, etc.. were solid white 2/3 of the way down.

But I'm heading out to ride a lap over Schofield, Paradise Divide and Slate River Valley today - so, I'm sure I'll have some pics of the snow to share tonight - if it hasn't melted yet.

;-)

Yes - we have ~1600 sq/ft and a shed available for stashing. A work in progress.

Or...Mummy range, out the window this morning:D

Uselessness area and RMNP, so it's just for lookin at :(

Winters comin! Hahns peak would be good for ride from your room and some of the best snow in the state (500" + last year) Nice protected meadows that stay deep and fluffy all winter, and enough hills to challenge anybody without to much danger. Elevations are between 8500 and 10,500' with most of the riding at 10K. For sheer awesome scenery you can't beat Crested Butte and surrounds (awesome pics!) but the terrain is a little more vertical overall and demands you be an expert if you plan on riding those big slopes. Depends on what you like, but I think the average rider would enjoy the endless deep powder meadows up at Hahns, plenty of climbing where you don't chit your pants and your motel right on the trail. Now, if you don't mind trailering that's a different story.
