Stator problems?

Is the sled stock? unless something has changed for 11-12, Polaris no longer uses a dedicated ground on the regulator, and the issues that were xperienced on the Iq, were caused by internal components that did not meet spec for heat. Without using the chassis for heat dissipation, only the internals controll the excess power generated by the stator. If you deleted the headlight, something will give-either the regulator will fail, or the stator will overheat just like the old mod Iq in '05. Common practice on the race chassis was to install 2 or 3 extra handwarmers onto the sled somewhere so they will use the power the headlight normally would have. the electrical system is spec'd to utilize everything they installed at the factory.

Haven't heard of any issues myself, but anything is possible. Best suggestion I would have would be to ohm it out both cold, then warm. Usually, unless there is a major break in the winding, they will work cold and lose power after the machine has warmed up. Otherwise, if you can test for output check the voltage and see where it is at.
