starts and dies...

ok so im trying to help a kid I know figure out a problem with a sled he was given, 03 800, the motor was rebuilt by an uncle and they never could get it to run again, it will fire but then back fires and dies. I figured it was probably timing, but I know my 99 700 you cant screw the timing up, the way its built. Im pretty sure its a carbed sled but i havent seen it yet. Any ideas?

I have seen a few things cause this. The TPS should be checked. Also check the stator, as a bad stator will cause it to react this way as well. I would start with those two items and go from there. It may be something simple, or it could be a pinched wire under the motor that you chase all year.
