Starter problem.....

I am stumped............I have a buddy that has a 01 Summit 800 with electric start........last year he was complaining about a wierd sound when he would get on it. We thought track clip or something along those lines. I took it for a spin and realized it is engine speed related, a zzz, zzz sound (funny ha?). I got it back to the house put it on a stand and verified it to be the starter drive gear being sucked out and trying to engage at high engine speed.....the more rpm the further the drive gear would get sucked into the ring gear. I replaced the spring on the starter that keeps the drive gear disengaged and it did not help. I even shimmed the new spring a little tighter and still no help. I have no idea why it would just start doing this? Any ideas??

Thanks ahead of time for any ideas!

hmmmm.....anybody?? This seems odd, but it appears the primary clutch is causing a suction and pulling the gear out on the starter motor shaft, it appears the higher the rpm the further it is sucked out.......

Not seen this on a Doo, but my chum had a lot of trouble with his Pol. Although his wouldn't spin with it. His would venture out to the flywheel while running and would bind up the wholle bloody motor! He was riding down the trail about 70 klicks from no-where one time when it did it to him. Thought the motor was dead, but eventually found the starter gear engaged into the ring gear and tied up dog-fast. Got it released and was fine.

Did it a few more times before he totally removed the E-start.

If yours is simply staying engaged upon starting - prolly not gunna doo quite as much damage, but if it is sucking in AFTER it is running - then you could really doo some damage!

Mine on my '02 has never given a hint of trouble, ... other than cheap Yuasa motorcycle batts don't like -30* mornings. :o

New Spring

Had the same problem a few years ago. Tried a new spring, it worked a little while and then did the same thing. Someone was selling a new spring just slightly stronger. It's been perfect ever since. I don't recolect who sold the spring but it was on Dootalk... Maybe do a search. Randy
