We're looking to try somewhere new this year for riding and Stanley, ID has come up.

Can anyone give me an idea of what that area is like? Can we ride from town or do we have to trailer?

Thanks!

Yes you can ride out of town but if you drive south 20min you will save a lot of time. The terrain their is mellow at the beginning and steep as hell once you get into the good stuff. Not for the faint of hearts. Make sure you keep up on the Avi. warnings. If you drop your sled off some of the ridge lines its gone. Great riding tho!

In Stanley, you can usually find what ever you are looking for. Not a big town and a long ways from any real populated areas, so the nightlife can be a little slow.

As far as riding goes, good spot for putting on miles on trails, playing in meadows or heading out for the steep and deep. One downside is that if CIEDA goes forward, a good chunk of the steep and deep will be off-limits. Stay tuned.

And the scenery is top notch.

The trail system is great so you can ride right from your motel room. If you are headed south toward Galena Summit, you will want to trailer, since it is 20 or so miles. If you are headed toward Banner Summit, you may want to trailer as well. However, there is some real great riding within just a couple of miles of town.

Give us a little better idea of what type of riding you like and we will be able to help out more.

CIEDA? what is it?
Some great mountain riding, but it can be cold!! Lots of times when we leave in the morning it is zero degrees outside. Not a lot of people, you can ride all day and see anyone. We go every year, McCall 5 days and Stanley 5 days.

Can someone recommend a time of year to go and a place to stay that doesn't break the bank? There's only two of us.

Thanks in advance!

Don't know how I missed this. Interesting idea. If I can find one more guy to come with is (there's only 2 of us) we might be interested.

Simley Creek is cool because you can ride the goods right from the door. No TV in rooms and dinner closes early. Very good breakfast/lunch with a small store and gas.

Mountain Village Inn has more to offer but you will need to trailer to the goods (or ride a bunch of trail). More dining options, hot spring (see pic above) a few bars and tons of hot chicks. Actually I lied about the chicks.

I Like the Casino for dinner.

Cold as hell in the winter. I always go in March. Might try earlier (Jan) this year if they have snow.

Greetings Blk88GT,

Study a trail map there is an area between Stanely and Smiley Creek that is off-limits to sledders.

One of the better rides is to Fourth of July Creek Lake it's a great run I realize the google map leaves a lot to the imagination but generally there will be tracks you can follow. After you leave the groomed trail be prepared for a trail that sucks but once you reach Fourth of July and Washington Lakes, Life is Good.

I can say 4th of July is a great area.
Does anyone know if you can follow the valley down from Washington lake to the valley below and out. I know there is a creek at the bottom to cross, but how steep does it get? Can you go back up?

Washington Lake is up in the Germania Creek basin, which is a tributary to the East Fork of the Salmon River. I know that there is a trail (open to dirt bikes) that runs down Washington Creek to the main Germainia Creek Trail (which extends from the Pole Creek saddle downstream about 14 miles to the confluence with the East Fork. I don't know how good it is for sleds (it has been 15 years or so since I was there on my dirt bike).

In any case, I would be careful here. You don't want to be forced to go out to the East Fork, since you will be 80 road miles from your truck (assuming you park at the mouth of 4th of July). Also, the area near the East Fork does not get much snow compared to the mountains above (leeward side of the Boulder and White Cloud mts). However, getting back up Germainia Creek to the saddle with Pole Creek should not be too bad so long as there is not much sidehilling or timber.

Sorry that I can't remember more.

Two years ago in January we tried to run up from coming in the Pole Creek side, but ran out of daylight. Snow was low and we needed to cross a creek, but where close to the valley I think that goes up to Washington Lake.
Maybe will try again this year from the bottom.
Yes you do not want to go down Gemania Creek, that would be a long way from the truck.
