st Helens

hey jac

turn the shoulder its people like you that get us in trouble , turn him in what a dork. Mind your own business i know its not right but making threats is rediculous, you sound like a true tree hugger. Come on down to the south side and say that stuff in the parking lot im sure there would be lots of people to shut you up. Heck i have not even heard that from a cross country skier their usually pretty nice down there.

Youreally think I'd turn a guy in your wrong. But the point got taken, there are lurkers on this site who look for this kind of stuff to use as amo to the state and the forest service.

If you think i'd be afraid to say it to anyones face then again you'd be wrong, and just so you know I'm from the south end, I was born and raise down there in Packwood that's why I hate to see things like this, that's my home.

Travel above 4,800 ft closed to anyone without a climbing permit in area 2

http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/recreatio...documents/NVM_Closure_AreaMap_BW_8x11_001.pdf

You're assuming they didn't get a permit, even though they can be obtained for free at the SnoPark? Why? It doesn't seem fair to assume that these guys were breaking the rules simply because they were at the crater, when that can be done legally.

For anybody who is interested, here is the relevant language from the FS site regarding snomo'ing on St Helens (I bolded the portions relevant to this discussion):

Area 1 -- Crater is closed to all entry except for scientists with a permit.

Area 2 -- All travel above 4800 foot elevation (treeline) on the volcano requires a Climbing Permit. This includes snowmobiles outside the designated non-motorized zone on the Monitor Ridge and Worm Flows Climbing Routes.

Area 2 Permits: From November 1 through March 31st permits are available at no charge by self-registration at Marble Mtn Sno-Park and the Climber's Register at Lone Fir Resort in Cougar. From April 1st to May 14 permits must be purchased for $22 in advance online. Snowmobiles are prohibited above 4800 feet on Mount St. Helens between May 14th and October 31st. For details please see Climbing Permit webpage.

Area 3 -- Area north of Mount St. Helens is closed to entry by snowmobiles. Ski and snowshoe access is allowed only on developed trails. Area includes Pumice Plain, North Fork Toutle valley, Johnston Ridge and area surrounding Coldwater Lake. No camping, pets, or stock are permitted. Off-trail travel requires Administrative Closure Permit issued by Monument Headquarters.

Forest agents will ticket any riders in that area on the east side of the mountain ( windy ridge, riding from wakepish ) it is market as no snowmobiles, or motorvehicles.

Any bad press for our sport is bad... and if I'm wrong then I'm wrong. But the Randle forest service will in form you of other than what is posted here, and that is were my information was taken from.

I did not defend it as to keep it to myself, but so it can stay open for everyone... forever.

If that's true, it's total BS! I'm a lawyer and I will gladly help defend you or any other sledder that gets a ticket for riding in any of the zones marked as legal on that FS map, for free (assuming of course you have the requisite climbing permit). Just PM me.

See there lies the problem, at the wakepish snowpark trail map that area is marked as closed to snowmobiles, all of zones 1,2,and,3.

A little back story is that we can see guys climbing it in the spring, however knowing that it's marked on the map, and the fact that I don't feel in needed to break the law just to have a good time. We asked both a patroling ranger in the area, and asked at the local ranger station and were informed by head of the law enforcment group that it's out of bounds and there is no riding inside the monument boundry. I also ride with two fellows who were ticketed in that area three or four years ago.

Now if it is legal by permit, then they need to make them available in any snowpark that can access the area. Granted from my side it's a pretty good shot of riding to drop off windy ridge and stay out of the area 3 closure and then acccend the mountain in the legal area but it could be done by most sledders. Yet there is no permits or info at the snowpark I ride from most of the time. I only get to marble about once every other year.

Again from everything I knew up to this point that was / is off limits. It does seem that there is a legal way to do it, and I hope that was the process used in this case. My only concern was keeping the areas we have open.

I will continue to atempt the foot from mouthectamy.

The east side of the bast zone is OK to ride, but the maps show the WHOLE mountain closed, even the south side on either side of that non-motorized zone. That is what the law enforcment officers told us as well.

I see there was errors in my info and I'm sorry, I had asumed that federal agents would know how to do there job.
