Spring Riding

Anyone have any input on the snow conditions expected to be had March 17-23 in the Grand Mesa Colorado area? We are planning a trip out that way, hoping its not to late to get some powder. Last year was Togwotee in mid-feb. This trips gonna be a little later. Should we be looking at going futher north? Trying to find somewhere thats hopfully not to set-up. If we have to we might have to move the trip up a few weeks. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated...

Every year is different. By longer-term statistics, March is the snow month in Colorado, but in recent years we picked up more snow and water in April/May two out of four or five years.
I don't ordinarily think of mid-March as spring snow, but it is some years. Base is likely to be firm but not solid ice. Will soften for mid-day, but scratchers are needed early and late. Real questions for powder riding are when does it snow and at what temp? In March, we often have snowfall at a cold enough temp that the new is fluffy. You are not likely to encounter Sierra concrete (or whatever they call it) in March with new snow.
No warranties, guarantees or promises, though. I would try to back the schedule up a week or two to earlier.

Have a good time!

What we're looking for is the "Champagne Powder" we've been told about. I think i might talk to the rest of the guys and see if we can come over mid-Feb. Mother nature can be a b!tch, no hard feelings if she decides to prove your info wrong... lol

March is PRIME TIME on Grand Mesa. Hit up Thunder Mountain Lodge for a great place to stay, with ride in/ride out accomodations and excellent food and service. You will not be dissapointed.

Mutty,

FYI, I spent a few days there (TML) during the second week of March last year. Spectacular conditions with nonstop fresh powder each day; but then again, who knows...
