spring riding gear

What do you guys ride for spring conditions? I came to the conclusion that I need to wear much more protective gear than I am currently wearing. Knee pads, chest protector, elbow pads ...... The standard layering is hot for winter, spring will be way too hot.

Does anyone out there were motocross gear? Thinking pants and jersey with the other safety gear should work pretty good, then bring some layers to put on top for the ride in and out... I got all the gear from my mx days, but I would like to hear from other experiences before I try it out.

What about wearing the mx boots? I currently wear snowboard boots and I like the support, has anyone worn mx boots in the spring? I am worried that the smaller footprint of the sole will make walking in the spring snow difficult.

Thanks for the help. If the response is to stop crashing... well I have thought about that obviously and I doubt it is possible. I tend to be pushing myself pretty hard a lot, even though it looks like I suck. :p

Out.

You should wear a smaller helmet so you don't think so much.

I don't think you would want to get into MX boots, snagging your seat and not having any insulation would probably not make you happy. but the rest of it would seem ok to me.

don't let the one crash/injury make you think it's going to happen every time. With all the protective gear, it seems it'd be hard to control the layering for warmth.

true I had a bad one last weekend, but also had a good one before Xmas break. I tend to crash a lot (previous nickname in MI was crash).... it is my destiny.

Mr. Whipple

Ruffie,

Maybe just wrap yourself up in Charman................

:beer; B

depends what the weather is like! t-shirt, sunglasses usually do great! :D

I dont usually wear my headgear (but, take it with me), just the helmet with goggles i wear.

light weight gloves (mechanic type), tshirt under my upper torso protection suit, and light weight boots (some type of hiking boots. sometimes) and thats pretty much all that i change.. yup.:)

So I tried out the MX gear yesterday. I have one of those mesh jerseys and wore that along with elbow pads and the mx chest protector. Stayed pretty cool the whole day. The mx pants worked good too, but the combo with snowboard boots was a little weird and didn't hold my knee pads in position very well.

Stayed cool, stayed dry and everything worked pretty well. I kept a couple of layers in my backpack just in case it didn't work out very well.

SUNSCREAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't wear your winter boots. You'll be wringing your socks out up on the hill, like I did yesterday.

I left the truck in a sleveless shirt, hoody and my tek vest...got up the trail about 5280 feet and wanted melt....

Those chest protectors are really hot, same with my black Bwear. The motocross one I use is clear plastic and flows a lot more air. I would recommend trying it out if you have one available. Only problem is the backpack fit at all.

Going to try out the MX boots on the next ride and see how they do.

Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses mandatory. I was even thinking about bringing an umbrella for some shade.

helmet,boots,jersey,and checkered pj's!!!!

I have a jacket with zip off sleeves, take that off when it gets too warm
leaving me with tekvest and long sleeve t-shirt
Under my regular pants I just wear shorts.

Helmet always
boots seem to be fine as well..

I need to go one more time... should be 75-80 this weekend.

Helmet/sunglasses, beacon/tshirt/tekvest (do take the arm thingys off though), snowboard pants & boots.... works just fine

If it gets real warm, ditch everything but the boots & beacon...

Yikes Mx boots would TEAR the HECK outta your seat... Plus be REALLY heavy... Klim has some boots that are pretty lightweight and would probably give you the support you're looking for. MX boots sound like a NIGHTMARE on a sled...

I wear just my Klim shells on the bottom and get a little hot but try to dress down the top to regulate temperature. I did try MX pants before and they aren't waterproof so they're a total nightmare... spring riding means you're probably gonna run into mush while you're out there... mx pants are worthless. they get wet and heavy and then if you have to spend a night or just have a cold snap come through or weather move in your bottom layer is WORTHLESS!!!

I wear Klim pants and a tank top and I pack a jersey and my Klim coat -shell.

I dunno, I usually would rather be a little warm than do without a good solid layer while I'm out there!! I do know some peeps who wear shorts and either take off their pants up there when they reach a spot wear they're leaving gas or packs... I dunno I might do that if I hit a REALLY hot day....

usually I just switch to dirt and ride up into an alpine lake with some nice glacier run off to beat the heat!!!

thats so wrong lol.

So what works and what doesn't..

MX boots. Too heavy, maneuvering from one side to the other required a little more work. Didn't like it. Though the stability they offer when riding standing up is really, really good. You kind of lock into the sled like on a bike. Much more of a control feeling. They held up my knee pads better also. They were to hot though.... figure wet feet is par for the course this time of year. Your either going to sweat them out let too much snow in it seems. I like to have a lot of support too, so that is part of the problem..

MX pants work much better in the spring weather, much better than my klim pants. Jersey and Chest protector were much better also, lots and lots of airflow.

He is a pic of me looking lame... Photographer is supposed to help with the posing... did a bad job.
