Spray Painting rails?

Actually after reading procedures on this you don't have to sand old paint down just scuff it up then etch primer it and paint.

Huh??

Aren't your rails bare aluminum?

Cleaning is VERY important... with a good degreaser. Etching primer also very important.

What color do you want to go with?

If you have a local body shop that can use some good quality paints... you should be able to get a durable finish with profesional grade paints and not break the piggybank.

Does anyone know what red Polaris uses? Like cherry red, apple red etch.?

So to give anyone who cares an update on this....

I talked to a few automotive guys that paint for a living and they all said go for it just prep it correctly. Here is what they all said to do and what I did.

They said to start off by getting a sanding block and sand all the crap off of it. They said you don't have to "polish" it but get it looking new.

After that get some steal whole and this will help remove anything in the tight spots the sand paper missed.

After that get a bottle of Acetone and clean it a few times. Keep cleaning until your rag has no grease on it. After this just use a wash cloth with water to remove extra acetone that may be on. Let dry.

Use rough Steal Whole to scuff up the surface. Then use ETCHING PRIMER. Not sure what the difference is but they said it has to be the stuff that says etching right on it. They said put a couple coats on to make sure to get everything. (I just finished doing this in my project)

After the primer is dry take the steal whole/sand paper and scuff up the primer and paint. I was surprised when they told me it doesn't matter what paint. They said if you prep it right it will all stick to the primer.

After Paint scuff the paint up some and put on a few layers of clear coat and your done.

Thats actually COMMON with ALL the M-series Cats! Wouldnt blame that one on powdercoating. Did the EXACT same thing to a set on my buddies... no paint. (just riding along, hungh?...didnt hit a thing?)

Picked up some supplies for painting my hood, suspension/rails, a-arms and helmet. Will be applying matching vinyl graphics to the hood and helmet and clear coating over them. Couple hundred bucks worth of stuff there, but alot of it will be used on different projects. Left to right ya got your additive for painting flexible plastic (added to the clear coat), your plastic primer, (for bare plastic), reducer (thinner), hardner, urethane base coat, urethane clear coat, rattle can of etching primer, aluminum cleaner (max of 30 minutes to paint), grease remover. Using a black with green metal flake.

well the cheaper way to do this and yes i pulled my m8 suspension out took it apart last year and painted....very inexpensive and holds up to everything i threw at it..........Refrigerator paint hard as hell when it drys,,,,,you need to put a coat on then let dry something like 5 days then apply second coat.......the little hardware store by me has a bunch of colors too......http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs...ooglebase-_-D24X-_-202041162&locStoreNum=2843

Thanks! I was just gonna ask what brand to get. Now I will be calling the hardware store in the morning to have them order it.

I will be going black on the rails and I have used that epoxy style appliance paint and it has worked well and holds up great.

Are you suppose to scuff up the paint before you put clear coat on?

For automotive type paints, if you let it sit for more than a day then you should scuff the base coat with some 450.

Got some of my painting done. Rails and one set of arms. Tuxedo black. Hope it hold up near as well as pow-coating.

I painted my lawnmower deck this year and I have some extra graphite based paint left over it says it can be used on snowplows. Says its super slippery. Do you think that this will work on them

Well here it is so far. Finally got a few minutes today to put it back together still have to put the wheels back on and the cross bar for the limiter straps then tighten it all up.

These paint jobs look pretty good. I have been tossing around the idea of painting also, but didn't think it would bond very well. Lets see some pics with a few hundred miles on them. That would help me make up my mind.
