Spilled beer on the laptop... Now what??

Spilled a little bit of Mich Golden on the keyboard of my laptop, immediately tipped it upside down so it would not run down inside of it and wiped it up as good as I could and shut it off right away. Completely tore it apart and used compressed air in a can to dry off all the connections and everything I could, the system board did not appear to get wet, mainly the keyboard and the connection where the screen plugs into was a little wet. Now, the screen is really dark, almost need a flashlight to see it, color is still there.

Any idea's on how to get it back? Or is it junk?

well if you cant fix it plug a regular monitor into the back and push Function and for my computer ( compaq v3000 ) its F4 ( it has a little monitor on it ) yours might have a button that says somthing along the lines of icd/LCD but it will have somthing/LCD or a monitor and it will work just like your laptop monitor.

but let it dry out some more and if backlight doesent come on try that and if you dont like doing that ill take it :D:beer;

I've got a couple other monitors around I can plug it into so I can get some info off of it. But before I go and buy a different screen for it I wonder how I can verify that's the problem or if it's something else that a new screen might not fix.

dont get offended but you kinda deserve it man, mich golden is way to good to get treated that way. Hope you learned something. Consider it practice for drinking while fixing the sled.... I dont know much about comp. doesn't sound good though.

Actually, the beer was sitting on the desk beside the laptop, I turned to talk to my daughter and then she distracted me as I was turning in the chair back toward the desk and the roll top part caught and jammed in the desk therefore resulting in just enough of a jolt that the beer bottle accidentally fell onto the keyboard after losing the battle to try to keep it's balance.

Sounds like the backlight isn't workin.

If you got it all washed out in time.... beer is terrible on electronics.... beer and wine are among the worst.... Just clean everything up and make sure all the connections are solid. There's a chance the backlight inverter fried.... those aren't too expensive if you can find 'em.

I've the cover off the screen and everything in there looks good and dry, where might I find this "backlight inverter"? The plug in that connects the screen to the mother board leads to a thin board on the screen, could this inverter be in there?

Sounds like that is what it could be, there is not backlight and when I try to brighten or darken the screen there is no change.

I've spilled orange juice and coffee on stuff before but never had any troubles until now.

Sorry for the hard time. I hope that you get it all straightened out. I wish i knew more about computors to help you out.

Note to self....

Keep the chidren away from the computor while drinking.

An idiot???? :confused:

Found this on ebay, might have to give that a try, that's what I've got exposed right now and unplugged the pink and white wires with no result on the screen.

Have you
a) put her in time out yet
b) verbally expressed your disappointment
c) told her to get a "switch" from the tree outside

for this egregious (sp?)travesty.
:eek::)

Usually a pink/white wire pair going between the backlight (panel behind the LCD) and the inverter board. There'll be a few wires between the inverter board and computer.

Thank Mule!! I was ready to buy a new screen for the dam thing and didn't know anything about an inverter.

You obviously need to learn that some people are capable of drinking around a computer and some are not.

How are you with cell phones and driving or should i keep my distance?

I would say that my hours on the computer compared to number of spills is enough to qualify to have a glass of liquid near me while computing. I came on here hoping someone would have done the same thing and could maybe share their experience in getting it fixed... and it just so happened that someone was able to tell me what the problem was. So, it was worth it.

Phone/driving.... haven't had an accident in 20 years, and that was a car/deer and a cell phone wasn't any where near that deer's ear (or mine:D)
