Speedometer spring stuck in shaft, Help Please!

So another problem... the speedometer stopped working yesterday on my zr500 so i got the square spring and pulled it off the drive shaft and the other half the old spring is in the shaft! :eek:HOW DO I GET IT OUT?? :confused:I have tried every thing i can thing of im at the end with this sled. PLEASE HELP!:(

bad bearing

when your speedometer drive adapter breaks ( 2 inch long square cable) that goes bewteen the angle connector and the drive shaft. This is a indicator that a drive shaft bearing is failing or has failed. Its usually a 1 inch sealed bearing on the end of the drive shaft. You can hold you hand up inside of the tunnel and feel with your fingers to see if it feels centered in the bearing housing. if its failed, its not too hard to replace. pull slide rail, gears in chain case, pull out shaft. this may have be the reason your speedo failed.
take a look see.

yep if the cable end broke the bearing is bad..to get the end out try a sharp booger picker and pick it out if it is stuck grind it flush withthe brass insert and try again ..sometimes you can hit them with a blow tip and it will dislodge them...

Tried that, tried a small screw, as far as the bearing that fell off and it seems fine, my friends dad said those sled were notorious for speedo breaking, any truth to this? any one wanna buy a zr ;)

"Bearing that fell off"???? Would you be talking about the piece on the end of the speedo cable that goes overtop of the spring? That is not the bearing that Rick and Snowrider were refering to. The bearing is in the tunnel wall and is sandwiched between two flanges. The drive shaft goes through the bearing and the end that the speedo spring goes into sticks out the other side of the bearing.
The speedo went on my 01' mountain cat 800 at the same time as my voltage regulator so I thought it was an electrical issue. Got the VR fixed but still had no speedo. Not knowing any better I kept riding and finally one day, I was flying down a forestry road and my track locked up. Good thing it was on an icy road and not in the powder. Anyway, my drive shaft wore right through the bearing and the flange and dropped completely out on the one side. Lesson learned. Was a good opportunity to put extrovert drivers on though. Cost with the new drivers pressed on and everything else was about $650.00. But if you just need to replace the bearing, it's easy and cheap if you do it yourself.

I have a friend who is die hard Artic cat..after the first 3 yrs of riding (and pulling his dead sled out for loosing the driveshaft bearing 2 timeshe finally followed my advice and started replacing them every pre season..since then (15yrs ago) he has never lost a cable end or a bearing...change the bearing(40 bucks tops)and use a bugger picker(looks like a small ice pick) to remove the broken peice..I have drilled thm with a small bit but you have to be careful....
