speedo sensor

My 06 Xfire700 speedo has been cutting out periodically for the last 2 or 3 hundred miles. I know that the sensor is very common. My question is, what are the odds that it is the sensor and not the DD. It has cut out three different times now, for a couple of minutes at a time. I am planning on opening up the DD this spring to inspect, but would like to go through the winter without opening it. It has 1200 miles on it, and will probably get 500 more this year. Last DD service was 400 miles ago. Leaving for Michigan shortly, and don't really have time, plus I hate to screw up the gaskets or something and not have time to fix it before I leave. I will make time if its neccessary. Last thing, are these DDs as junky as the new ones with reverse-or should I be okay-my dealer claims that these are fine! thanks

davidd, I had the same problem on my M7. The speedo sensor wires were pinched, causing them to short out. As a precautionary measure, I had the DD checked out, and it was fine. It was due for an oil change any how... make sure you do that once a year.

The sensor is magnetic so there's always a chance that you have metal shavings in your dd that are messing up the sensor. Open your dd and check. You can open the dd without removing it from the sled. RTV works as a gasket too. Also put di-electric grease on the quick disconnect connection to eliminate any issues there.

Is there any place that I can get step by step instructions on how to take the DD apart? I can get it out of the sled, but need to know: torque specs, what to do for gaskets, how long to let the new gaskets sit before refilling with oil, what to look for inside of the DD, what to clean the inside of the DD with, any other issues? Thanks guys, its a shame that I have to worry about this DD all of the time! A pewrson should be able to put more that 400 miles on at a time without having to look at this DD. Arctic Cat should be embarrassed! I do love this sled though, I just wish there was something I could do about the DD.

Once the dd is out of the sled it's easy. Just remove the bolts holding the cover. You can clean the inside with carb cleaner. Just make sure to dry it well before reassembly. Once open, the gears are very easy to take out and inspect(especially since it's non reverse). You can use high temp rtv silicone as a gasket to seal it back up. Just apply to both halves and reassemble and you only need to wait 1 hr to fill back up. Cat now makes a gasket kit for the newer dd's - not sure on the older dd's. I just put mine back together with rtv and that's what it had factory - 08 M8. Not sure on the torque specs for the cover bolts. I just snugged them up. Keep in mind you are threading into aluminum. So don't be superman.

The problem could very well be just a bad speedo sensor. It's pretty common for them to go out. Just try replacing it. Might save you from opening up your dd.
