The tach on my 03 700 rmk quit working, i pulled the cable out and gave it some gas to see if the tach cable would spin but didn't? i was wondering if i need the cable or some other part that i don't know about? thanks

If it's the speedo I'd check the driveshaft bearing (below the secondary clutch), when they go out the speedo quits working.

You need to check the drive shaft bearing on the speedo drive side and make sure it isn't going out... often when the speedo stops working this is the issue.
If it is ok, then take the speedo cable lose there at the drive gear on the shaft and at the speedo itself and you can turn the cable by hand to see if it turns freely. If it does, then it is the speedo drive cable. There is a little piece of cable that goes from the shaft end into the drive gear, it's about 2" long. They twist off if there is much resistance in the cable or drive gear.
