Speed Demon's Powerplant Transplanted!!!

Six weeks ago I lost the PTO side rod bearing from, what I think, was an oil issue on my 755. After exploring many options- Indydan TM1, an ebay 855 w/ no miles, another 855 w/ 50 miles- I decided to buy Steel's rebuilt 855 with an SLP performance package and compfusion mounts.
He's put fifty miles on the rebuild- new crank/clutch/belt, new top end, new oil pump (hard to tell). But, original cases:face-icon-small-dis. After reviewing the timely crank threads that MH recently resurrected, I'm a little worried. Steel said the old crank was pulling apart at one of the presses and that the cases will be good- here's hoping. Steel is a high performance diesel mechanic with a lot of nice sleds in his quiver. I really feel he would have put new cases on if he thought they were bad. Overall, it was good transaction facilitated by the swapmeet.
The engine switch was definitely a test for me. Thankfully, I was rewarded with a fire up on the third pull.
Just a few questions for anyone lurking.
1) The engine came with an SLP torque or push arm (PTO side). Where does this mount? Do I need it?
2) Compfusion elastomers are showing signs of wear. Do these, in fact, wear out?
3) Primary has a light blue spring with a pink stripe. What would be a complimentary spring for the secondary? I haven't changed the helix yet, sorry to say, but I do have 19/42 gears.
4) Brake indicator light stays illuminated. Any ideas?

Even the 755 had some great low end power. However it seemed to fade on sustained climbs. I'm very eager to test the power of a tuned 900 that so many of you have raved about. I feel I got a lot of engine for the money and really hope it will last for a few years. All thoughts, comments and suggestions are appreciated.
Oh yeah, I changed my screename. Using my own name.....lame

Download the instructions on the SLP site... You will get all the info you need

Are they Black rubber or Reddish urethane? They do wear out, just like anything else.. if they are black... update them to the new Red ones (about $70)

Clutching works as a "system".... you need to have all components in place to realize "great clutching" ... also, it seems after a while of getting into these 900's that proper clutching equals longer crankshaft life, longer belt wear etc.
Change out to a known clutch setup.... vary weight for altitude and be done with it.
Almond 140/330 primary (the blue/pink is 140/360 when measured with the same standards)...
Almond Primary spring, 10-68 to 10-74 weights depending on altitude range.
Primary clutch MUST be set for the proper .010-.020 side clearance on a new 3211115 belt (only use this belt IMO). Secondary 66-44/66-42 helix, Red/pink secondary with 2 delrin washers UNDER the spring cup.... deflection set to dead on 1.25"... about 1/4" float in the secondary clutch...

4) Brake indicator light stays illuminated. Any ideas? (burned out bulb?)...Did it work before you made the change out?

BTW... the 900's are 866's.

If you want the engine to last... make sure that the Primary is perfect...perfect bushings, perfect weight bushings/pins, perfect spider clearance, perfect balance and perfect side clearance.... Clean the exhaust valves and replace the bellows if needed. Replace the intake boots if cracked, set the TPS dead-nuts on, make sure the injectors are clean and flow correctly, new fuel filter, new rear mounts, replace the starter cord with a good one while out of the sled, RUN FBF's throttle/oil cable... Set the oil pump dead-on.

Good luck.

You didn't say what year engine, what track, what altitude you ride at most often etc.. How many miles on the engine?

I'm sure you got a great engine... the ball is in your court as to how you take care of it and if you finish your investment in your new engine.

I take it for granted that you have the pipe and can and the PROPER SLP reflash for the ECU??

AND that you are putting a 2006 Motor in your 2006 sled.

MH,

Thanks for the quick reply. 1) I will download SLP instructions. 2) Compfusion elastomers are red. 3) I'll replace the helix and springs following your instructions in the fall. 4) The brake lights worked properly before the swap. 5) Intake boots and reeds are new. 6) TPS seems to work well but will take your advice and check it in the fall (now have an extra throttle body and TPS to practice on). 7) fuel filter is new and hope the injectors are clean. 8) Oil pump is set dead on and have FBF cable. 9) A flashed ECU came with the motor. 10) Assumed the VES was cleaned when the pistons were swapped but can check. 11) 151" track, ride at 10,000' , 185 pound rider, intermediate ability. 12) '06 motor in '06 chassis, 866=900, yup.
Great sledding right out my front door but not a lot family support behind this activity. A strange guilt versus pleasure complexity in my world.

Is the motor in the sled yet?

If not, IMO... send in your injectors to witchhunter performance in WA... they will test them, clean them and check for proper flow... they also give you a before and after printout of performance.

Do you have the SLP pipe and can with your seutup? (that is the 900 SLP pipe ... and not the 700 SLP pipe)??

You will probably want to run 10-70's with the rest of that setup, at your 10,000 foot altitude for clutching with te performer kit. The series 11 wieghts at your altitude would be counter productive, IMO.

Motor is already in. Probably should of posted up questions before I put it in but the sled was monopolizing garage space and there is a limited amount of time I can remember how to put something back together! The SLP pipe came with the motor but the SLP can was from the 755. I assume that the can is compatible . I'll get the weights changed when I get the cluthes tuned. Guido, if your out there, I have some extra electronics that Steel sent with (i.e. speedo and display).

i am always lurking in the shadows..

MH took really good care of you it seems..so i stayed out of it, lol..

i sent you a PM on the gauges...lets do this.. ;)

Wow, I haven't been on here in a while... Glad to hear you got it going Grant! That motor is a powerhouse. The cases in my opinion looked good, I didn't cut corners when I rebuilt it, and if I felt the cases needed replaced I would have done so. The exhaust valves should still be nice and shiny as I cleaned the he!! out of them. That motor is pretty much brand new from head to toe, and you can ask Josh (jskattum606), he rode with me after I got it rebuilt and he can vouch for me that it was probably the best running NA either of us had ever been around... endless gobs of power! If you have any questions you know how to get ahold of me man! In the meantime... have fun with it!

She Run Good

Finally got to try the new powerplant. A few problems along the way. Oil pump must have been damaged during shipping. The housing had a hairline crack that weeped oil. New oil pump last spring. I thought my clutch weights were for a lower altitude. Weighed them on a coke scale, 74 grams. Needed 10-70's. So ground off the 4 grams. Guess what! They were MTX weights- zoink! So I sent the primary off to SLP for new weights and a balance. Whats another hundred bucks, eh? Got the proper helix and secondary spring and, of course, the delrin washers. Also cut in a bunch more venting. So, how was it in a foot of fresh?- pretty damn awesome! Low end wasn't a heckuva alot different than the 755. But midrange to WOT was dramatically more powerful. I hit an early season sinkhole that I'm not sure the 755 would have powered out of, but this baby shot out like a watermelon seed squeezed between the fingers. Doesn't vibrate too bad at idle but definitely more vibration than the 755 at cruising speeds. Pretty much stuck to the meadows as I was out there solo, but hope to hit some steeps this weekend. Thanks again to all the 900ers. Without this forum this machine woulda been off a steep cliff.
