Sooo, this just happened,, Alpha rear arm break

Just noticed this. Cracked on both sides. Note that at full compression top of arm where crack is (#25 on alpha microfiche) does not contact the idler arm (#33) and it does not contact anything at full extension either, which is where it would appear the damage would be coming from. But without it actually contacting anything seems a very odd break, wouldn’t believe that part of arm is under any load.

Could it be from ice build up?

Looks like a torsion failure. That bit sees lots of side load and twisting load.

It hit at full extension. U can see right above ur yellow circle.
Question is why did it extend so violently to break?

In the second picture there is some paint chipped off of the tubular arm as if it did contact it at some point. Maybe at a time when the track was too loose, letting the suspension drop too far?

My second guess is like previously suggested, maybe ice buildup, or a combination of ice buildup and a defective part (ie: the metal might normally break any ice without issue but if there was a defect in the metal it may not have been strong enough to break the ice).

There’s another guy on Snow and Mud that has the same issue.

Seen it happen to a few sleds. Little cast piece that is constantly getting slammed into when you become airborne and skid locks open abruptly. Its not necasarrily designed to act as a stopper, but once bushings wear in a little, it contacted on the sleds i was seeing. Also like mentioned above, if ice falls in it acts as a little crusher and the tubing and ice obviously win over time. One of the many applications of a casting in that skid which are seeing failure under regular use.

Nice thing to catch before it fails, luckily it is a quick easy fix.

tki was going to make that piece last year but I don’t think anything happened. There were a few on Facebook that had the same thing happen.
