Greetings Colorado SW'ers:

My son Josh will gradute from college in Helena, MT mid December and then head right to Steamboat Springs for a job as a snowmobile guide. Any sledders in Steamboat or near by that might be willing to offer some local knowledge or recommendations of housing, doctors, etc. I'm sure he will also want to learn the "non-guided" opportunities in the area as well. He is a good rider that is very responsible and safety focused as well as AST Level 1 trained. He rides with all safety/survival gear and avy pack. I will tell him to lose the shovel and mountain bar as I caught crap for both the whole time I was there. lol.

I went to see Steamboat when I rode with Burandt a year ago. Great place. It seemed really busy compared to our small town life. What would he expect to pay for a bachelor pad there?

Any suggestions for what he should bring beyond our normal riding gear? His sled is set up for 4-8 k right now. I remember getting to 10K with Burandt, is that the norm around Steamboat?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. As a loving father I'm thinking maybe I better put on the sled deck and come down to have a look around as soon as conditions allow. Look forward to meeting any Riders in the area. EW

Working at SST eh? Do you know if he's working the North division or the Rabbit Ears Pass division? Housing will kill him in Steamboat. Don't lose the shovel, they kinda help a bunch. As for the mountain bar, that's one man's opinion.

$1500 TO 2000/MONTH FOR A 500 sf DIVE.

8500 is the lowest with good snow.

Come on up. I'm not from SB but I used to work there, I live 50 miles (highway) South of SB.

WHAT???? Whoever told you to lose the shovel hasn't seen or ever been in an area where an avalanche could happen. If that snow comes down it turns hard like concrete, clawing at concrete to save someone's life doesn't work out to well. A mtn bar like said by PJ is an opinion, if you ride better with it use it.

Thanks for the responses. I should have clarified on the shovel thing. I and my sons always ride with a shovel, probe, and emergency gear in our packs. I also had a shovel on a tunnel bag. That was the shovel that I got the friendly ribbing about. My first time stuck I got out the 'ol shovel like I do here in the heavy NW snow. Chris pulled up and made a few carefully placed foot stomps and rode my sled out of a terrible trench. I was amazed at how effectively he could get a sled unstuck using his boots and ability.

The shovel thing was never a question of avalanche safety, that shovel was always on my back.

Sounds like he might be sleeping in his truck for a while. He didn't give any details on who/where he will be working for, he was just super stoked.

I'm really starting to think I better make a scouting trip down that way just to be a good dad. Any ideas when the conditions might be right?

Any ideas where he might ask for local trail maps to start learning the areas and names? What about race gas or AV gas, is there a decent supplier?

Thanks again for all the help. EW

Get to any ski town early, otherwise housing is a beotch to find. If he is looking for a place for himself...well, you will have to be Daddy war$$$'s. But you can survive and have fun. I first started out ski bumming and we had a two bedroom place with 4-6 people at a time. It worked, and some of the best memories. Yeah, my parents went with me and it gave some comfort to have them there with the first big step......Also, if the snow does not come early, neither will the money to support himself. Extra jobs will be at a premium cause everybody is waiting for the area to open......just experience talking.... Shovel.YES, Mtn bar, who cares what CB likes. Its my frickin sled and I like what I like....

I really do appreciate all the responses and help. I was just trying to be light hearted in my first post about the "Extra" shovel and mountain bar. I wasn't trying to bash or set up Chris Burandt for a bashing. Chris and company were gracious hosts, I had a good time, and the teasing went on both ways. Thats all it was....teasing. Thought I should clear that up. Thanks again. EW

Eric, I'm not trying to plug anything here. But the only sled rental place is SST in Steamboat.

They are half way up the Pass. If he wants to rent a place, there are lots of places here, in Kremmling where I live. That is only 50 miles from Steamboat and 25 from the rental cabin where the sled tours run out of. It will be cheaper for him to get a place of his own without having to deal with a bunch of college type roomates and such. The night life ain't so great but 30-50 minutes in any direction there is a major resort with all the night life he could want.

He will be working on Rabbit Ears
He will have the opportunity to learn about all of the great stashes of powder on the pass.
Housing- watch our paper online Steamboat today.com
I don't remember what kind of sled he has, hopefully its a Polaris, I have all kinds of clutch parts, cam arms, helix...
Bring your shovel and your mtn bar they come in handy for us beginners
As far as race gas goes I will have a drum on the pass this season, lots of people are asking for me to keep some around.
It should be a great season, if you have any other questions feel free to give me a call 970-819-6501 Thanks Jason Cobb
BTW his resume was suitable to be sent to Microsoft for a job, it was excellent.

This guy wrote a solid resume??? They must be learnin him something at that new fangled college. At least he didn't allow himself to be towed by a Cat. lol

He called me tonight with the details, thank you for giving him the opportunity. Sounds like he will be calling soon for a little more info. He talked of selling his boosted sled to not have to worry about the race gas thing. He might be the only voice talking about selling (or should I say buying) a boosted sled right now. We'll see how that goes.

I guess the more important question here is how soon should I come down to bring his tooth brush? Can't have a people person with bad teeth. Any snow accumulation there yet? Thanks for your reply and contact info. Looking forward to meeting one day soon. Have a good one. EW

He doesn't have to worry about Race fuel. He can run straight 100ll and be just fine, as long as he doesn't go over 12 psi. I run it and I run at 10-11 psi and my temps don't get that high. As for snow, not enough to even think about it yet. But Denver is under a Winter Weather Advisory (ain't that messed up?) NOAA says snow in the mountains from Monday Night to Weds Night with Thursday being Sunny and cold. I'd bring his tooth brush in Late January until otherwise posted.

You can buy race fuel in Steamboat at:
Western Petroleum
1694 13th St., Steamboat Springs, Co

As someone else mentioned 100LL is also an option and can be bought at the Steamboat and Hayden airports.

I won't be out there until January, but send me a PM with his contact info and I can introduce him to some sledders.

I also may know of a room to rent in Hayden if he doesn't mind the drive.

Thanks Scrappy. He sold his boosted sled and decided to run stock this year. He found a room that he is really excited about with some people that he says seem very nice. Thanks so much for your offer. I'll pass your message on to him. PM next. Thanks again. EW

EW..if you're son is looking for some people to ride with have him drop me a pm. Myself and a few buddies will be riding rabbit ears on occasion this winter. I'm a fellow washingtonian(?). Ok well maybe not 100%, but I did spend some time up there. I can remember coming across a few of your posts in the WA forum. Spent many a days on Mt. Adams

Feel free to drop a pm if lookin for riders. I ride buff pass and rabbit ears regular. Welcome to steamboat.

Quick update.......Josh made it out of College and into Steamboat last week. He says it's a great town, 3 Coldstone ice cream shops. We have to drive 2 hours to get to one here.

I appreciate all the responses and offers to help him out and show him around. He made it sound like he will be pretty busy through New Years but will maybe get a chance to get out after that. He is going to need to sign on here and quit lurking. I'm hoping to come down maybe in late Jan or early Feb when ever it slows down for him. I will post up when I get a firm date and maybe I can hook up for a brew with all of ya. Thanks Again and Merry Christmas. EW
