something wrong with my sled

i have an 01 mountain cat 800 carb and it runs great, but after riding it a little ways like less than a mile or so it dies and locks up, but i can spin the clutch and that frees up the engine and it runs again after about a half hour. anyone have any ideas what is going on?

Sounds like you cold seized it...........

That's when it was pushed a little hard before being warmed up. The pistons get large before the cylinders do. The aluminum melts a sticks to the cylinder wall. You could look at the piston through the exhaust port. Quit running it.
New pistons and maybe just clean out the cylinder wall.
This could have happened because of ice in the carb. too. But it probably would only have been running on one cylinder if that was the case.

i havent been able to run it long enough to see if it has been using any oil.... the sled was blown up last year and we just got it rebuilt.. ok ill try lettin it warm up more.... i also have old gas in it would that do anythin?

Did you check the piston to cylinder clearance/tolerance. Did you split the case and check for debris, clean it and reinstall. Did you remove all the air from the coolant system(burp it)???

My bet is you cold seized it, and it needs rebuilt again, or even the crank is out.

my dad rebuilt it... the piston ring broke off and broke through the crank case and he patched that up and it is pretty good... i might try just lettin it warm up a lil more.... i changed the weights on it and then ran it to make sure it didnt rev over the redline.... so it didnt get a chance to warm up really.... it ran perfect when it was going though.. i could stand it up whenever i wanted

id be looking for a new motor, jmho. patched, what do you mean he patched it? i dont think its going to get better if you try to let it warm up more, as stated above the damage is done already and warming it up more isnt going to solve your problems. we all wish it were that easy

Patched up crank case? What does that mean? Good chance it could me leaking through there leaning it out. As said the damage is done it will need to be torn down again. Also was the first tank of fuel mixed with oil?

ya.. i have no idea how he patched it up... but we took it to a dealer and he said it looks better than all the other ones he has seen... he put some braces to support the patch too.... but the dealer said it looked great like it would work just fine.... i havent put a fresh tank of gas in it yet but when i get one i will mix it with oil... probably 50:1... i let it run on idle outside for a while and it never died there, its only when i am riding it

I'm not trying to be rude, but from the way you post it sounds like you have no business rebuilding a sled, maybe you just haven't figured out how to type the questions, It sounds like you know very little about sleds. My suggestion is take it to the dealer and have them figure it out.

When it dies, does it lock up the motor so it wont turn, if so the motor has to be rebuilt.

ya... i know.. honestly i dont know much about rebuilding sleds, but my dad has done it multiple times, my brother had some bad luck with blowing up sleds, and i actually blew his up earlier this year, he hasn't been there when it dies so he doens't know how to explain it so i'm tryin to explain it best i can to try to give you a picture of what happens... it will be drivin along just like normal, then it will die and lock up so i can't pull the rope (maybe its just that i cant pull it hard enough because i have a broken hand but i dont think so) but then i can rotate the primary clutch and that will free up the engine so i can pull the rope again, it doesnt click or even sound like its going to start up the first times i pull it, but after i let it sit for about a half hour (usually right after i get it towed back to where i left from) it will start again... dont know if there is possibly somethin stuck somewhere in the engine thats not supposed to be there cuz the engine did sit for the summer because it used to be my brothers sled and he blew it up last winter, but he got an m1000 so this sled just sat out there so i bought it from him.

what is happening is the piston swells up to big and sticks to the sides of the cylinders locking it up. Or the crank bearings are out and as they heat up they stick. Either way it has to be rebuilt again. If you look into the y pipe and the piston is scared you will know which it is. This time have the dealer rebuild it

yes, and after a rebuild you should bleed the pump and make sure its working, also premix the fuel 100:1
