So I finally bought a MAC

Got the macbook. About time. I was sick of the window crap, of locking up, downloading everything under the sun to make something work,...etc..

Different for sure, Playing around a bit, and the navigation is a learning thing.

I bought a mini-DVI to VGA adapter, much better visual on the 23" monitor.

Wireless mouse and keyboard from my PC works well, except for some minor settings..
The only thing I have a concern was the 5.1 speaker system I have from the PC. I can't get it to even just work in 2.1 on my mac.

Is there a sound blaster unit available??

regardless I think it will be better in the whole pic.

Anyone have any good tips on what I might not know about this computer?

Anything would be greatly appreciated.:D

Welcome to the family. It's awesome to own a computer that works all the time. Enjoy worry free p o r n surfing and not having to update and reboot every five minutes. I think apple takes an opposite approach to microsoft and tests their software before they release it.

oh...and now you can cop an elitist attitude and talk down to your buddies for owning a PC!

Congrats, enjoy it!

I like the "drag two fingers to scroll" feature....If you drag two fingers down the mouse pad, it will scroll....

I use the firefox, and if you look around in the programs, there are a few that are kinda fun... like when you want to add captions to photos...

iphoto is great--- just plug in the camera, and it works... no stinkin programs needed...

video editiing is good too...

the battery on mine let go, about 2 weeks before the one year warranty, and a new one was sent to me overnight.... I bought the extended mac warranty...

If I had to get another computer, I would get this again...

Oh, and photo booth is a lot of fun after you have been drinking...

I figured out that trick from being lazy.. RIGHT AWAY!! LOL

I am still trying to figure out how to save web page favorites. it will soon be clearer.

Thanks for the notes fellas!:beer;;)

I am still trying to figure out how to save web page favorites. ;;)

In Firefoxi, I just go to Bookmarks at the top of the page.. Easy...

I dont use Safari, unless we are testing our website...

I did get the Microsoft Office for Student edition, because of where I work...

Needed that... even though it is a microsoft program, it works...

And I have parallels, so that I can run windows, (again, for work) and I have to say, without a word of a lie, I think it is more stable on the mac running this way, than it is on my Toshiba PC???

bd.

heheh, yeah.... the two-finger thing is something I always try to do on lab/work laptops... never works :(

The audio output on the Macbook is actually a dual output... analog and optical. Get a MiniTOS adapter and go from there, output should toggle over to digital in the Sound control panel when you plug that in.

As far as programs I use... Firefox/thunderbird for web/email. VideoLAN is a 1000x better player than Quicktime will ever be, and it works a lot better on Mac than windows. That's available at . There's a motion sensor in the computer this app makes use of. Highly entertaining.

Also, Welcome to the club :)

Nevermind,... figured that out.. in a snap;)

I also got the iwork and the applecare protection plan.

Good job... that Applecare plan has saved me several thousand $$$.

It got me a free iBook G4 from my first iBook G3, and also got me my current Macbook for $300.

A few months ago I got a new keyboard/trackpad/radio board for free with that, button stopped clicking.

Mule,

Can you play .WAV files? People keep emailing me stuff and I can never get it to play.

Im with ya brother ...we got 3 pcs,,,my Toshiba laptop , 1 mac and a Dell.......the Mac just seems sooo much easier and no hiccups

Quicktime should do that... WAV is an ancient format, equivalent to "BMP" for images.

Try it in VideoLAN if Quicktime doesn't play 'em. iTunes will handle those too; but that's still using the Quicktime engine.

Sounds like the Mac is the way to go. I never even thought about a Apple when I was computer shopping a few years back. Any downsides? I have a HP 17" laptop right now.

First, I've never used a Mac on the internet, so I can't compare results, BUT, I'm using my 3 year old Sony VAIO notebook, Win-XP Home, and Internet Explorer 7.0, and it has never "crashed".

Not sure what people mean by their 'puter crashing. Once in a great while some quirky things happen, like it won't shut off unless I hit the manual start/stop button, but no big deal.
And this thing is on from 7:00a.m. to 11:00p.m. almost every day.

Wildcat% uptime
17:16 up 148 days, 1:13, 2 users, load averages: 1.71 1.19 0.60

Yeah, that's almost 5 months uptime... no crashes in 5 months... my work computer gets grouchy if I don't restart it at least once a week...

Well, I got my 5.1 surround to work.
I needed the Griffin Firewave external firewire card.

Reason for me to change over, was I got a malfunction on my hard drive, it kept shutting down all the time, and asked me to back up my system. While trying this it would not back up. I had to buy a second 500 gig drive, and reinstall windows, then transfer everything over, then wipe out my slave drive and so on..
In my newly installed PC, I found many devices were not working properly.. even though all updates, and it told me it was functioning properly, Outlook jammed up a lot of crap, windows media center is a joke, and never worked, and my camera software always didn't work.
Then the tower switch went, and also the power pack needed upgrading, and then more ram....yada yada.

Mine locked up a lot, crashed (blue screen of death) and crunched and crunched and slowed down dramatically.

Life should be simpler now... LOL:face-icon-small-ton

the people that don't have backups ahead of time.......your macs drive has the same life expectency as the drive in a pc.anything that spins 5000 to 10,000 rpms is going to fail. no bearing lasts forever. even though its a mac you still wanna keep backups. good luck with the new machine.:beer;

My computer is screwing up left and right been thinking of doing the same thing. What does a good mac laptop cost??

Just the basic MacBook with the smaller screen will run you about 1200 bones. The MacBook pro can be up to about 2500. I have the regular MacBook, I think its one step up from the basic MacBook and its fine for what I do. I got the Notebook, IPod touch and a printer, scanner, copier and fax for 1250 total after rebates.
