Snowpulse avy bag?

Just a few questions for the guys that were at any of the snowshow's:

Did anyone actually deploy the bag with a helmet on??
I had a friend tell me that with no helmet on when the bag deployed it pushed his chin down. No biggie for skiers and boarders but might cause a serious problem in regard to visibility with the helmet on for us sledders.:(

Does anyone else think the design of the snowpulse deployed may cause you to slide with your head facing downhill?

I think the idea of head trauma protection is great, just a little skeptical of the design.

I almost bought one of these bags this year, but IMO too many what ifs and unknowns! Call me close minded but I went with trust tried and proven ABS Vario. Plus I love the idea of being able to change the capacity of the pack!

Local dealer is supposed to be getting a compressor next week so that they can fill the bottles themselves. When they get it, I'm going to try one out while wearing a helmet.

Video, youtube, etc...

Can't you fill them from another HP-Air source? SCUBA tanks, industrial air, shop compressor?

What's the pressure on those bottles?

I pulled it at the Edmonton show. I was wearing a hat and ya I think with a helmet it might push your head down a bit but I don't think it would be anything to worry about.......especially if that red bag is floating your arse to the top.

I don't think you would be able to move your head much once it deployed but that could be the way its designed to do it..........like when someone's put on a board, paramedics velcro your head with those pads. Could be the idea behind the design.

It was really easy to pull and the loop thye use is really easy to grab.......think it would be way easier to grab than the ABS one. But I've never pulled the ABS trigger.

My .02:beer;

The snowpulse design appears that in an avy situation you would be forced into travelling backwards. In turn you would not be able too see anything coming at you as well as having the back of your head and entire back area exposed to trauma!

Tried on both Snowpulse and ABS at the Edmonton Show.Had full intentions of buying the Snowpulse but it felt very restrictive just being on and not deployed.Went with the Vario 10 L instead.

Avalanche Flotation Devices (AFDs) always seek the surface, so in the case of this design you would be face down and partially buried. Most likely you would be facing head downhill with most of your body under 6 to 10 inches of snow. You would have a better chance of being completely exposed on the surface of the avalanche if you struggle and "swim" to the surface as the avalanche begins to slow down. Any body movement tends to shed the snow off the victim, the snow scientists call this reverse grading.

Also, in well over have the cases of an avalanche flotation device being used the AFD drags the victim to the side of the avalanche, well uphill from the stopped leading edge of the slide.

if you pull the trigger in an abs as you see the slide and youre on youre sled you can still try and escape on youre sled . with the snow pulse you cant move youre head or see side to side . that was the only real down fall i saw . what happend to those domes that blew up around you they had a few years ago ?

The ABS system is also a very large system, with wings hanging off each of your shoulders. This means that it is not as simple as turning your head and looking behind you up the hill. With an ABS system you would need to rotate your entire body in order to get the wings out of your way in order to look uphill.

What athe ABS system gives you is side or peripheral vision, where the Snopulse system takes away your peripheral vision and leaves you blind off to your sides.

With all the Avys this year looking at a pack. Any more reports on the snow pulse? I like the guage and the fact that refilling it costs a lot less so I could practice every year, or let buddies try it. I like the idea, but concerned of the newness and no dealers in US to try one on.

Ok so speaking from the mind of a paramedic. I will give my .02. With either system you are going to be forced face down. From the design it doesnt matter because both systems inflate behind the wearer. However in roughly 28% of slides the victim is killed by trauma. (Remember Animal God rest his soul) In the snowpulse design the head, neck, shoulders and even the chest are protected by the air bag. It is my opinion that if you are cought in a slide it wont matter if it impairs movement or vision.. In reality most people wont even know they are cought untill the slide has overtaken them. So you wont pull the cord till ur cought. Both systems are awesome but From a medical stand point and from 8 er md's here in town (All avid skiiers and back country guys) thye reccomend the snowpulse simply because it helps in more ways than just getting you to the surface.

rocky mountain yamaha has a few in stock. they are going quick, so if you want one get off the fence and get one coming. call garth or myles at 403-627-2127 and they will set you up.

Also I am sure that the pressure in the cylinders that snowpulse uses is 2216 psi. so you would have to go to a dive shop or a fire station to have it refilled. Possibly a medical gas facility.

We set one off at an Avy course, it doesnt push your head very much. It does cradle around and support it, I think its good.

I was told that one of the advantages of the snowpulse is the fact that it releases its BREATHABLE air around your head as it deflates and will supply a buried person with some head room and oxygen. Gives a buried person some extra time to be rescued. I am not a expert, just repeating what i was told. Be safe and have a nice day.

thats why i got that one, the other ones are filled with nitrogen, but i think you cant go wrong with either of them, also the snowpulse has good storage

Great thread guys.. Thanks for the info
