We spent a few hours digging out a pit on the east face of Frisby Ridge. I made a video of the pack test. It's a little hard to see close up but interestingly enough the first shear plane was not exactly paralell to the surface. There is defenetely two PWL's that are apparant. We managed to get both to fail. The video shows both.. The pit was over 3.5m deep!.. What a hole we dug.. Hope this gets watched and is usefull..

Out of sheer curiosity, who taught you that test? Was the back of the column cut as well? And what kind of rating would you give the snowpack after something like that? BUM Test?
Just curious.

also very interested in the field test and doing my field avy course.....is that how the experts test the breaking point ? also curious.

thanx for the effort and digging the pit and posting it ......good effort boys

I lightly tapped with hand to shovel, then tapped, then hit, then slammed, nothing let go with as much force as I could give it without jumping on it. So then we decided to jump on it for the final test. It's not a complete video but it shows the two failure planes. The back was cut. I did the test just as Lori at Zac's taught us.. Just thought it would be good info to share. The area we tested was wind loaded and on the steep short parts that we tested with the sled we saw no insability however the jump portio of the test did get it to fail in two locations.. I think next time I will make a better video and make it more complete..

no this was only a portion of what we did, sorry it's not complete. next time though!! I made a new years resolution to test the snow every time I ride and post a vid on it!

Hard to say from the pic but doesn't look like you picked a steep enough slope. When picking a spot it is very important that you find a small hill that is representative of the slope you are checking and is of low consequences if the digging you do triggers a slide

Good for you guys for actually doing a test and applying what you learned in your avy training. Good experience, although you might consider changing you landing. Your going to hurt the twins doing that!
