Snowmobile Registration and Area Designation - IMPORTANT.

After I attended the Boise Snowmobile Club meeting last night and heard how little money we have to operate the grooming program in the designated 8A Idaho City area, I needed to get the word out. The groomer coordinator had set a budget of $6,500. for fuel and $10,000. for wages for the coming season. Guess what - The money that will be received from the State of Idaho to operate the Idaho City program this coming year is between $16,000. and $17,000. This amount is from your registration and area designation. That would leave nothing for parts/repairs. Call that budget tight is an understatement. The Idaho Department of Transportation hasn't told us yet how much they want for plowing the parking lots at Granite Creek, Mores Creek Summit and Whoop Um Up parking lot. That plowing cost comes out of these funds also. It will be interesting to see how everything works out this season. The funds this season are already set but in the future, please register your snowmobile and consider designating 8A on your snowmobile registration. Jens Steffensen - Region 4 Director Idaho State Snowmobile Association, member of the Board of Director's of the Boise Snowmobile Club, and I've snowmobiled for about 37 years.

Damn, I just moved here from Washington and thought it was bad there.. 12% cutback in grooming last year and I heard up to an additional 20% this year.

Sounds like soon Idaho isn't going to be able to boast about "hundereds of miles of groomed trails."

In Washington they were adding a "donation" to all snowmobile registrations renewals of $5. You had to specificaly ask about it and decline it or you were charged without notice. Even with the additional $5 bucks they are still cutting back grooming at an alarming rate. Where I road last year the groomer stopped in March, the year before he ran all the way through end of april til they closed the snow park.

Can you point me to information regarding the area designations? 8A and so fourth. I live in Boise, not sure exactly where we will ride but I hear Pilot and Fairfield are choice for local day trips.

This is my first year in Idaho, looking forward to it despite all the politics.

Idaho designated area "Use Codes".

My snowmobile registration form I received in the mail has the codes on the back. I tried to find website with them but no luck. Idaho Park & Recreation phone number is 1-208-334-4197 for assistance w/sticker purchase questions. Pilot Peak area north of Idaho City is ** 8A **. As a member of the Boise Snowmobile Club, our club supports the groomer there, and I hope you designate that area. Join the club and also Idaho State Snowmobile Association(ISSA). They both need your support. ISSA website is idahosnow.org and I'm listed as region 4 director. This website listed the clubs and links to the clubs in the state. If you have any questions, call or email me. I live in Boise.

Isn't the budget and GROOMER allocation determined by the number of registrations that are designated for that area?

I know in the Rexburg are District "33" that they have always struggled to bump up a couple hundred registrations to get 2 groomers.
If you don't TELL the dealer or whoever is filling out the registration for you, they will just put on whatever area they want that money to go to.
If there is no designation, Please correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't it get stuffed back into the general grooming fund to be distributed wherever they see fit?

I guess my point is "TELL THEM" or designate where YOU want that grooming money to got to.

Where the money comes from, etc.

Grooming machines are purchased w/gas tax revenue. Part of our registration fee goes into the grooming program area YOU designate on your registration. Registration of resident snowmobiles are coming under IDOT and you will register them just like you register your car, etc. Snowmobiles were the only vehicles separate from the way we register all our other vehicles, cars, truck, m/c, etc. That's the future plan but still in the set up stage. At present, if no area is designated, the registration money stays with IDPR and usually pays for groomer break down expenses, etc. during the winter season. One idea was to make sure that a designated area was MANDATORY on the form or registration could not be completed. MAJOR CONCERN is that IDOT will have fees for administrating this snowmobile registration system and that amount will be taking away from our program. How much that fee would be is the question???? Money lost to us forever. Bottom line - Support your local snowmobile club and the Idaho State Snowmobile Association. They are a voice that represents YOU.

I too just moved to Idaho and sledding is one of the biggest reasons.

Keep it away from IDOT, the ease of the registration system here encourages people to register.

Let them take it over and you end up like WA and most the funds will be lost to adminstration cost and leaving you NO money to work with and no way for you funds to designated to the area you ride.

The area I rode most was alomst never plowed or groomed while some areas were groomed twice a week.... PLEASE don't change what your doing.
