910 AM PDT TUESDAY MAY 05 2009

?SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED AVALANCHE DANGER LIKELY OLYMPICS
WASHINGTON CASCADES AND MT HOOD AREA THROUGH FRIDAY?

Following an unusually strong weather system that moved over the
region late Monday into early Tuesday and brought up to 6 to 12
inches or more of new snow at higher elevations an associated
upper trough and moderate westerly flow should continue moderate
to occasionally heavy showers in most locations at lowered
freezing levels for much of Tuesday especially in the Olympics
Mt Hood area and Washington Cascades near and west of the crest.
This should be followed by a second slightly weaker but still
unseasonably strong and wet frontal system mid-late Wednesday
morning through early Thursday. While some limited warming is
anticipated ahead of the next front Wednesday morning and mid-
day overall this weather situation should result in generally
lowered freezing levels periods of strong winds and substantial
amounts of new snowfall above about 4 to 5000 feet in the north
and 5 to 6000 feet in the south. Overall snowfall amounts ranging
up to 2 to 3 feet or more are possible at higher elevations with
greatest accumulations likely near and west of the Cascade crest.
Along with associated strong winds this should accentuate the
developing danger on north through east exposures and create some
large and unstable cornices near higher ridgelines. Both the
cornices and some potentially dangerous wind slabs expected to
develop over recent crusts should be very susceptible to either
human or weather triggers including possible brief sun breaks
between showers Tuesday afternoon and again mid-late Thursday.

At lower elevations lesser amounts of wet snow rain or mixed
rain and snow are expected. However the rain or wet snow should
allow the upper part of the snowpack to become increasingly wet
and weak with possible wet loose or isolated wet slab slides
likely gouging into or entraining 1 to 2 feet of near surface
snow and creating significant debris deposits.

Depending on location elevation and slope exposure increasingly
challenging travel conditions and considerable to high avalanche
danger should be expected for the next several days with slow
clearing and gradual warming Friday into the weekend adding to
the danger as the recent snow starts to melt and weaken
producing further natural slide activity. As a result travel in
avalanche terrain is not recommended until the new snow has had a
chance to either slide or settle and stabilize which should
extend into the slow clearing and gradual warming period likely
late this week and into next weekend.

This statement will be updated as conditions warrant.

theres two rookie snow shoers up there camping in schribers and are tring to hike the summit they dont know the routes and were climb in dangerous spot up the railroad i warned them to get off but not sure if they did. Their tents are off the trail in schibers......... after I warned them on the rail road we saw the avy on the chute it was big snapping full grown trees so those guy might be in trouble up there they were last seen hiking up the west side of the railroad and diappeared into the white out. and their green ford mini van is parked half way to the second parking lot. keep an eye for them fri:)
