Thought I would post this and get some opinions. Most everyone has snow now and most roads aren't in that great of condition. Is there anyone that gets boarder line irate when someone comes speeding down their road like they're out in the country??? I have a 3 year old that LOVES coming out to play while I shovel or pick things up outside. I never let her out of sight but I still get pi$$ed off when people come down the road like they own it. Just don't want anything to happen from someone else being stupid. Any thoughts or experiences from anyone else? (I won't claim to have been the smartest driver, but I've always had respect for others when roads are crappy)

We live in a delelopment just outside of town, so there really is no "speed limit".
There are always kids & dogs out playing.
The residents know this & are always careful, but the "lookyloos" are the ones who worry me.
They are out looking at homes & who has the nicest yard & who got a new car & such.
They are not neccesarily looking out for dogs & kids.:(

that one reason we built a new home last year. we lived on a dead end road and in the spring we would get all of these crappie fisherman come down to the channel and fish from shore. pretty much low life people with no exhaust and the junkiest cars you ever seen come ripping down the road

07rmkracer-

i live about 55 miles north of you (4 miles west of idaho falls) and have the same concern. i can't stand getting stuck behind someone driving overly cautious on the lousy roads we have here but i am glad that they do it. my daughter is only a year and a half old and thinks she is my shadow.....especially when i'm out in the snow. we live outside of the city in a quiet subdivision but there are still the occasional jackazzes (usually teenagers) that like to go drift busting in the area. one year, i had a friend of mine with a skid loader make a speed bump out of the snow piled up around the driveway. it was about four feet long and two feet high and it slowed everyone down after their first jump.

I used to have problems having to replace my mail box 4 or 5 times a year on a simular road from speeders that swerve....
I fixed them by a cement filled drill stem, rotor from a f250 4x4 welded on top, heavy frame around the mailbox and my best part... Drove rods into the ground from the post to the edge of the mailbox about where the lid is and sharpened the rods.
That has made for some good stories as a result, right there. hehehe

Yup i hear ya I live on a corner lot and the road takes a 90 degree turn just in front of the house all winter long I have people miss the corner and end up in my lawn. Its a 25 mph zone and with ice or snow covered roads people think they can still take it at 25. Luckily house is back from the road but i don't leave anything on my lawn :D
Hey gimp be careful with the mail box Ive read a few stories where people have collided with them over build ones and sued the property owner as well as one Case around here a while back that kids were bashing mailboxes and the person got tired of it planted a 4 inch metal tube and build a cover for the mail box out of 1/4 inch plate. needles to say someone lost an arm and the land owner lost a lot of money :(

Might want to reconsider that box if it is in the right of way.
I work highway construction and as far as putting any traffic devices on the right of way it has to have a crash test and all posts have a break away device of sorts. Federal regulations.

The wife talked me out of my land mine idea i had first...
In 7 years I lost close to 30 mail boxes
This is a 25 mph zone. They are always doing 55 to 70. It is unpatrolled
I only put the pipe a foot into the ground. The frame does not go over the box, framed under its base.

You could always make one that swings away, with the post mounted a good 5 feet back..

There are a couple of them here in Il, though probably more for tractors and the like...

As far as snowplow operators hitting mailboxes, they fall into 1 of 2 catagories.

The first is the operator who accidentally hit the mailbox in a well meaning attempt to get as much snow as possible leaving little for manual removal.
Simply an error in judgement.
Really no harm, no foul. Mistakes happen.

The second is the putz who has no remorse about the "several" mailboxes that
fall casualty to him every year.
This retard doesn't have the brains to wipe himself after he deficates.

I caught these schmucks who were doing that. Car load of kids out partying. We pulled onto the road one night after racing, about 3 AM, with the truck and gooseneck. Sure enough, here they are about 1/4 block from my mail box changing a tire. Busted windshield, mirror and side window. I had seen this car going down our road a number of times, rattling our house windows with their stereo, speeding, flipping me off etc...
I walked behind the trailer after parking the rig in the driveway, stood behind it with my arms crossed, under my yard light.
You should have heard these guys freak ! They started screaming at each other"I know that dude, he races cars" "He's going to turn us in !" "Hey, it wasn't my idea to always hit his mail box !" etc... they started to fight among each other and left their empty beers, jack and flat tire laying there when I started to walk toward them down my driveway. They freaked and took off.
There has not been a mark on my mailbox since then and that was over a year ago.
My little trap worked. I know they busted a windshield, wiped out the pillar on the car, mirror and side window....
Serves them right !

That's pretty sweet ^^^^ Thanks for the postive responses. My best friend just joined the local police force. I told him I would make it worth his while to keep an eye on my street. If it really came down to it, I do park my truck on the street and wouldn't mind someone 'giving me a reason' to get a new one. ;) Just worried about some crazy person taking out me or my family. Ride safe!!!

We had a reserve cop that lived across the street from us in Hayden Lake. Grade A P-Rick! The kids (not me, honest!) used to take his mailbox out on a regular basis. He did a set-up similar to yours and they had to move on to explosives. There was more than one night that we heard the BOOM followed by the THUD of his mailbox landing on our roof. One time it ended up in our pool, a good 50 yards from the road. We figured they must have gone from M-80's to quarter sticks.
