Sledder Falls into Crater of Mt. St. Helens!

Just heard "breaking news" on a Seattle station at 6:30 pm on Sat. that a snowmobiler had "fallen" into the crater of Mt. St. Helens. That is a small county with not many resources for Search and Rescue, but we're all hoping for the best. Our prayers are with the victim of this fall, hope it works out OK?

MOUNT ST. HELENS - A man who was snowmobiling near the rim of the Mount St. Helens crater fell inside and rescue crews are trying to reach him, officials said.

The man appears to be uninjured, but is unable to get out of the crater on his own.

Crews from Skamania County Sheriff and the Clark County Volcano Rescue Team are developing a rescue plan, possibly using a helicopter.

Officials said they got a call for assistance at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon from a friend who had been snowmobiling with the man who fell into the crater.

Really pretty easily. If you've never been up there and don't have an idea of what things look like, it would be fairly easy to ride over the edge. Also, most that ride up to it want their picture taken so the person may have stepped back to far. Hopefully they get him out alright.
+1
But how does a guy get in that position????

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How the Hell does this happen, I just hope that they get him out safely with or with ut the sled if it is in there with him. I thought the crater was posted?

Heard that tonight too! We were thinking of maybe going up there tomorrow. Just don't want to have the brutal 15 mile ride to the Lahar! I've only been up the the top once and it was from the Planes of Abe. From that side you would really have to screw up. It's pretty obvious. Now from the East side I don't know never been up that gnarley chute. I would say though if you were standing up there you could slip!

Anybody know how bad it is to get to the Lahar?

We had two guys fall off of a cliff here, they parked their sleds and walked over for a view. Something happened and they both ended up at the bottom of the cliff. Newspapers totally mis-reported it. So, wait for the facts.

Wow, hope he is okay. Maybe they will air drop him some survival equipment for the night.

I guess if the snow is deep enough and it breaks at the edge or a cornice you can have problems.

Been stuck pretty good driving in a foot of snow only to fall into a 5 foot wash out in the field.

caught this on the 10 pm news ....... guy has been rescued with leg injuries. Apparently was standing on a cornice trying to get a looksee and the cornice gave , over 100 feet down I believe they said.
What goes thru peoples heads ?????? c'mon .........

News says cornice broke off. Scrapes and bruises and a hyperextended knee! OUCH! Probably lucky though. He is 52! Way to go old man! Gives me hope that I'll still be climbing to the crater ridge in my 50's!:D

Yah what he said. Only 1000 feet down.

"Snowmobiler rescued after falling into crater of Mt. St. Helens

A man was evacuated by helicopter after falling into the crater of Mt. St. Helens while snowmobiling on the mountain Saturday.

An aerial look into the Mount St. Helen's crater.

John Slemp, 52, of Damascus rode his snowmobile along with two others to the west rim of the crater at Mt. St. Helens.

Slemp got off his snowmobile and walked out onto a cornice overhanging the crater when it gave way, according to police.

Slemp reportedly fell about 100 to 200 feet before landing on the interior slope of the crater. He then slid on hands and knees to the bottom of the crater.

There was no immediate official word on Slemp's injuries. He was taken to Yacolt, Washington to receive medical care.

The call for help came around 5:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Rescue crews from Skamania County Sheriff and the Clark County Volcano Rescue Team responded to the call from a man who reported his friend had fallen inside the crater of Mt. St. Helens.

The man’s friend used a two-way radio to call for help. The signal was picked up by a man in Mossy Rock who then contacted 9-1-1 for help.

the good news is he is ok and was able to walk, the other good news is that the corniss gave way while he was standing on it so it could have happenned to a snow shoer or skier and wasn't caused by the sled. only law he probably broke is that you are suppose to have a permit to go up there. I know the skiers need permits but I guess I will be checking into the permit when I go down there

News report sez snowmobiles need a Forest Service permit, the FS is Investigating this accident. Earlier, the Mountianeers Club was making noise to keep sleds off St. Helens. This will give them some more ammo for their cause!
