Sled-to-Sled Communications

You didn't look very hard. I use one of these and they work great:

Compatible Models:
Garmin Rino: 110 , 120 , 130 , 520, 530 , 610 ,655...
NOT for Rino 650

NOT for Rino 650

Yea that...

Although I don't know why the hell the 655t and 610 would work and the 650 wouldn't that makes no sense.

Edit: One more Rino question. Does anyone know if there is a way to lock the screen? when its in my chest pocket all sorts of menus and buttons and settings get screwed up because the inside of my vest must touch the touch screen and cause changes.

BLAH BLAH BLAH ... reason to go sledding is to get away from people talking constantly (house with wife & three daughters) .... when we need to talk we stop.

Exactly! Wife and 3 daughters at my house as well. Last thing I need is somebody jabbing in my ear all day! Stick a handheld VHF in your pocket and call it good. Leave the chatter for the truck.

By the way we should get some kinda medal shouldn't we for the three daughters? wholly Christ..!

While much of what you say is true.
I have found having direct comms to my riding buddy has made the ride MUCH more fun as we can point out opportunities to each other, bust each other's chops on epic fails, congratulate on successful landings, ect.

For me at least, its really made it more fun.

As for my daughters.
they do better when DAD can offer words of encouragement over the headset while they are riding..:face-icon-small-hap

Any idea what the transmit wattage is?
I can't find it anywhere on their page.
I believe they are .5 watt.
The leagal limit one can use without a license!
Ur garmin 650 is 5watt on the gmrs which u need a license to use.
Only .5 watt frs.

I have the chatterbox slim(frs) and i like it a lot. I can communicate with all my buddies on their walkies, same distance too. (Unless u use gmrs)

Wish I understood why any of the manufacturers are afraid to go to the higher authorized wattage.

5 Watts makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE in mountain transmissions.

Its why so many guys LOVE the Rino.

And getting the license for that is a absolute NO brainer.

Just push and release the power button a screen should come up that lets you adjust the backlight, volume, squelch and lock the screen just push lock screen and your all set.

I wish i could find a Push to talk shoulder mic for it.. I bought a MotoComm snowmobile headset for it but didn't like messing with all those wires everywhere, also for some reason when I plug the motocomm in the garmin randomly shuts itself off sometimes.

Just do an Amazon search garmin rino 650 speaker mic

Yea I already did that the only ones on there are from a Chinese vendor, with a 1-2 month delivery estimate.

Anyone try the Uclear comms?
Our group uses them, they work well but are very limited range(guessing 200 yards or so in the trees, quite a bit farther direct line of site). When someone gets stuck you have to backtrack to be close enough to pick them up and talk also with the auto mic if you have a loud sled in the group it will randomly set off the transmit function (mainly on the trail in or out) this part is very annoying. Lastly all units must be on the same software version of they will not pair up, not a big deal once you know. Customer service from UClear has been awesome and the warranty has been good and each software update gets better.

Here is what I use: These radios are Baofeng UV-5RE Plus 2 meter ham radios programmed to the FRS and GMRS frequencies. The mic is waterproof. I put the radio inside my backpack then clip the mic to the top of the shoulder strap. 2 of these radios on Amazon are $68 then I paid about $25 per waterproof mic.

I have tried the helmet headsets and while I like them once they are on, getting your helmet on and off with wires attached is problematic.

No wires to worry about on the chatter box 1x slim

My group rides with Garmin Rino 530's. Rather than use a PTT mic we all run RAM handlebar mounts. You can see the screen and use the radio with your gloves on. The handlebar mount is key.
The ability to see your buddies on a map and track to them is huge for us when in the trees. No more looking and yelling. Never had any issues with the mount or the radio during LOTS of stucks and rollovers.
Make sure you set the radio to transmit on 5 watts.

Whats clear is that RIGHT NOW there is no absolute winner.
The HAM radios are the most powerful and offer the best possible antennas, but are also kinda the least well suited for what we are doing.

The units with the best helmet installations and Vox, are all lower power.

If the BC Link would jump up to 5 watts they would have a GREAT package for non-helmet mounted.

if we could get a great helmet interface the Garmin would be a SLAM DUNK as it offers rider location tracking.

I bought this for my rino 650. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008BGOYKM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Once I got it all installed in my helmet it wasn't bad...the problem I'm having is for some reason when its plugged in my rino shuts itself off randomly

has anyone else used MotoComm on their RINO? why does min turn itself off?

Besides that I just didn't like all the wires.

Edit: last season I ran my rino on a ram mount like this. While it seemed good, the Rino screen is way too small to see while standing up and moving..and it was always covered in snow. and when my friends radio'd me I couldn't hear them unless I was stopped. And if i was stopped i either had to lean down to hear and transmit, or pull it off the mount...so its basically no good in this position. Now I just keep it in my Avi vest front pocket. I have to stop anyway to ever use it so there is no point in it being on the bars/dash.

Rinos with ear bud

We use the Rinos with a ear bud plugged into it. Just put e ear bud in and then on goes the skull cap and helmet. Comfortable to wear all day. Small PPT button clips to my neck collar. When you stop and take off your helmet the radio ear piece stays in place wit he radio in y pocket. Picked up the ear piece on ebay for about $13 from a US seller. Got them in less then a week. Works well for us.
