Sled needs choke?

Hey guys. just got my sled out and runnin today after a bit of wrenchin to clean the carbs out and get things ready for a wyoming trip next week (bit late i know but we lack snow here at the moment). I took the sled out tonight on what little snow we had which was a bit hard. Sled starts and idles great and starting down the ditch i took it easy for about a quarter mile then started to rev it a bit and try some higher rpms. after i let off the throttle the sled would start to die when i pushed on the throttle again and the only way to keep it runnin was to run the sled with the choke on. now i havent put any new fresh gas in yet and we plan on siphoning out the old stuff tomorrow and tryin again.

what could cause this? temp was about 18 degrees and im runnin an atacc (newly installed). Any ideas on what to look at if gas doesnt do the trick. im also gonna try an little longer warm up period as it did this a little last year if it didnt warm up long enough but i only had to run it on choke for a short ways before it would run normal.

ideas and suggestions are much appreciated.

thanks
Alex

ok thats one of my theorys. we are going to test it a bit more today. its tough with so little snow on the ground here hopefully get more today.

sled is a 2003 RMK 700

Generally when you are having to use the choke or working the throttle to get it going ,your pilot cicuit is plugged up with something. This would be a good place to start, i would say clean it out and you'll be good.

I would go with hardass on this, make sure the vent hoses are hooked up also

ok went and checked all the things you said and everything looked good. i filled the tank up with fresh premium and started it up and let it warm till the idl rpms dropped from 2000 to 1500 or so. then started off easy and no problem so i stepped it up a bit more (we got a couple inches of powdery snow now) managed to get it all the way up to 80 mph and was runnin 8000 rpm.

seems to have been a combination of old fuel and not enough warm up.

any idea what rpms i should be running idealy? im not the smartest on clutching yet. i think the sled ingauges around 3500-4000 rpm right now.

Ran it in the shop with atacc. then had problems in the in-field test. took it out today with full tank of new gas and after a good warm up and it did fine. sled ran way better after the new fuel was in. the idle was more like normal.

Make sure you follow the atacc directions very carefully when changing the jetting to go out west. The first time I had mine on I went to West Yellowstone and the sled ran worse than if I had nothing at all.

according to the atacc instructions i shouldnt need to rejet at all. if im at 1300 ft here in iowa and we will be riding between 9000 and 11000 and atacc can compensate for up to 10000 ft i should be good all the way to 11300 ft on my normal jets correct?

i am bringing my jets and weights with me just in case.

thanks i appreciate the ideas and comments.

That is correct. In my experience it took up to half of the first day for the unit to compensate. Also when you shut the sled off for more than a couple minutes it may take a minute to get its setting back, so be patient with it because it may be lean during that minute when it is recalibrating.

any idea if the sled itself has to be running for the pressure chamber to adjust to the altitude? we will be driving up through the afternoon and night before riding in the am probably after we get our rooms and settled.

im glad you pointed that out.

clutching wise what do you suggest? my sled has a yellow aftermarket spring in it which i cant seem to find a manufacturer. slp single pipe, gutted airbox and the high capacity air intake horn are on the sled.

i have 10-58 weights that i believe were for the sled (previous owner's set up). weight chart suggests 10-54 for 9000-11000 ft. im currently running 68 g slp mtx weights with a 1g rivet in them for a total weight of 69g.

any ideas?

The sled needs to be running for the atacc to adjust. I run a polaris black w/ pink stripe in the primary, with 58g weights and a slp yellow w/ purple in the secondary w/ the factory R8 helix. That is with a SLP single pipe. What do you have for gearing? I have 19-39 w stock drivers. That setup seems to work pretty good for the Snowy Range area.

im also runnin 19:39 (believe this is stock) with stock drivers. as far as i know the secondary hasnt been changed from stock. the primary has been changed to a solid yellow spring which i believe is a polaris spring which would compress at 45 to 185 lbs i think. suppose i would be about right with my 58g weights with that set up?

im still pretty new to clutching and im learnin a ton every day.
