Sled deck W/ 2place vs. 4place

Has anyone ever pulled with a sled deck and a 2 place trailor instead of using a 4 place trailor to get 4 sleds on a trip? Does a sled deck take more or less fuel than pulling a 2 place trailor? What would be advantages and/or disadvantages of trying this?

I just bought a sled deck and am thinking of picking up a 14 to 16' trailer to go with it. I figured that would give me a lot of flexability of taking just what I need. I have a 34' gooseneck now and when only 3 or 4 of us go I was hoping to save some fuel. I wondered about the mileage too but there are times it would be easy to thow 2 sleds on the deck and go. It should help to hold a guy on the road crossing southern Mn. and the Dakotas. Those 40 mph winds are not fun.

I have pulled a two place behind the truck with a deck and it works just fine. As far as the mileage savings, it is probably pretty even with pulling a four place. The only difference really is two less tires on the ground.

There is another thread about trailers vs decks. The title is mpg: trailer vs deck, posted by rmkcowboy. Its about 10 or so pages down.

Yes....I have used sled deck and two place and also a few trips to Cooke City with sled deck and a 4 place trailer. Never saw much difference with the Cummins with sled deck vs two place trailer...Truck didnt know anything was on it!

Now I have a Dodge 2500 with 5.7 Hemi and get 11 mpg with a two place but with the sled deck I can hit 15mpg. Truck has a better ride with the added weight of the sleds over the bed vs on a tailer.

With a Sled deck you can park easier and get up to early and also spring snow much easier as well. Also with a sleddeck you will save on registration fees and insurance as well every year.

sounds like his plan is:

sled deck AND 2 place ... INSTEAD of 4 place

so, really not saving $ w/ registration.

4 place open?
2 place open?

youll have access to many more areas w/ the 2 place and deck vs 4 place.

but assuming thats not a huge concern either.

I've seen guys tow a 2 place behind a sled deck and it kinda looks like a pain. Yeah its easier to park but you have to unhook the 2 place to unload the sled deck. Its doubtful you would really save much mpg with the 2 place plus the sled deck. However if you dont always have 4 sleds with you the deck and trailer combo does give you a lot of flexibility for various trips.

Is your truck a short box? sled deck hangs out pretty far with a short box truck, would need a long tongue on your trailer for clearance!

Ive done this and its really not a pain at all. Most 2 place trailers are so light, all we did once we got the trailer unloaded was to slide it over far enough to get the deck ramp down. Never had to unhook it at all. Plus we were able to take it where a 4 place wouldnt fit. Depending on the 2 place you can also lower the ramps and place the deck ramp on the deck of the 2 place to get them on, pretty cool actually.

I run a 99 cummings short box, I use the deck mostly but when others want to go I hook up our two place behind, yes a 24 inch trailer hitch works just fine and I can jack knife the trailer around to unload the deck. Great versatillity. Aluma trailer and Moto Mikeys deck. Trips to Jackson hole I get 13 mpg pulling both. 15 mpg with just the deck. Dino

Thats been my experience also. Done the 4 place twice. To dam much weight to pull around on icy roads. Didn't work anywhere near as good as the rack and 2 place.
Currently have a power deck on a crew cab long box dually with a 2 place enclosed Floe. Best handling combo I have ever had, period. Jackknife the truck 90 degrees and load / unload all four without moving or unhooking again.
The only ***** I have is putting covers on the two on the truck. If things are frozen I often don't cover them, they stay pretty clean up there.

We just put the ramp deck down onto the the trailer and unloaded the sleds onto the trailer and then drove them off like we were unloading the trailer. Same thing loading, drive onto the trailer and then up the ramp onto the deck. Way to easy compared to a four place.

That's cause you haven't tried it.

No ya don't. Not at all.
You only have to unhook if you need to turn a trailer around on a tight logging road...which is why guys buy decks for late spring anyway. However, a deck and an open trailer are still a HELL of a lot easier to hand move than a big arse 4 place enclosed.
I have a 3 place V nosed TracPac. Set the ramp on the trailer and it sure keeps it from being steep. Drive the sleds down the ramp, move the ramp and run the sleds off the front of the trailer. Just did this about 2 months ago on my last ride.
