Sled blew up in a hole, Who has used helicopter recovery?

A buddy of mine sled is currently high in the mountains with a blown motor. We have tried pulling it with multiple turboed sleds to get it out of the hole it is in with no success. We tried come-a-longs, and putting the track on slides every and any thing we could think of just short of lighting it on fire and walking away.

My question is who do I call for a helicopter retrieval to pluck this thing out of its predicament? Also will insurance cover this sort of thing?

SW Montana.

What is it? Top end, complete motor shelled? I have heard of people rebuilding the motor out on the mountain, or even pulling the motor and rebuilding and putting it back in. It is nice this time of year so maybe an option?

Having experience with heli logging the feul alone would cost more than the sleds worth.can't you get to the sled early while the snow is hard and tow it out.I've towed my ski doo 12 miles in fresh powder with no problem. But every situation is different though.

Where in sw Montana? A guy I work with flys choppers and has already pulled a couple this year. If you want, pm me and I'll give you his number. We're in Bozeman.

we were riding up in Canada and a guy blew his triple motor and no way we could tow it out of the hole.... so we took it apart. Pulled the motor and pipes and two people took them out; we then pulled the suspension and pulled it out. We then tied up the track real tight to the chassis, spun the skis around, and two sleds pulled the chassis out backward.... it came out of a monster hole.

I've seen both done, rebuild on the hill and pull motor and take it out and return a week later with it rebuilt.

Insurance will only pay if the sled was "wrecked". If all it did was blow up, insurance doesn't pay.

Might try the local National Guard. The guys here will get a sled out if they can use it as a training mission. Might be worth a shot.

Granted we have a High Altitude Training Site here. But it still might be worth a shot.

buddy of mine just spent 2k on getting his flown out of the back country...on a side not, I called my insurance and they said if it breaks down way back like that...to push if off a cliff or run it into a tree and wreck it first, then they'll pay for the retreival..

wow ... nothing like having your insurance company pushing insurance fraud

either rebuild it there or you need more friends and muscle

with the weather were getting id go for the rebuild it there and ride it out

keep us updated

Some years back I just bought new sleds and decided to get full coverage, including Towing. Wife dropped hers in a hole and had to helicopter out. Insurance paid (USAA). Check your coverage and with insurance Co. Dont know where youre at but check with helicopter operators in the area. It depends on how far they have to go, usually hourly rate. (from retired helicopter pilot - Fuzz) Good luck.

Not sure who you would call in SW Montana, I have several numbers for guys in the BC area though, and usually between 4-700 bucks.

Anywhere between $400-$600 for a chopper ride out of the mountains here in NW Montana (Kalispell area). We've also taken motors in on sleds and swapped them out on the mountain. It's really not that bad. 2 people in my group have had their Mountain Horses choppered out of the backcountry and it was well worth the expense (and the ride out too!).

$2,000 for a chopper ride is pure anal rape.

My vote goes to the chopper ride, it's usually around 500, if your paying close to 1000 or more your probably getting screwed

never even came back I have totally rebuilt in the back country and or took motors out of other sleds to haul in and get it out we have never ever called a chop. NOW $ STROKE MIGHT BE DIFFERENT HAHAHA

seeing SW MT, know a local heli company and they got some sledders amongst them. out of the bozo/belgrade airport. what range is the sled stuck in?

well week two and the sled is still there the only reason I have not yanked to motor out on the hill is because its a nytro with a turbo and the tools and fluids and man hours to do a successful rebuild on the hill are more time than I have with only sundays off. I love my buddy but I used to make a career out of building custom show sleds and I am not willing to dismantle his sled on the hill. We contacted Rocky Mountain Rotors and these guys are more slippery to nail down a price to go get it than a bottle of KY. They first quoted $950 and we said ok go get it, then it was $1250 because it was at 11000 feet so he needed his next size up chopper. Then yesterday the day before we were going to get it they said $1800 was as low as they could go. Still scratching our heads on the best option.

Called one today for a dude on Turtle Mountain in Revy......they quoted 1k @ Arrow cause Selkirk was done flying for the day.....not sure what the damages were but the guy was probably happy to get it down.
