Skype

just started. using it to let my wifes grandparents talk to our kids and just got my parents set for the same deal.

so far it's OK. had some issues getting the webcam to be on and the mic and speakers to work, but I think I have it figured now.

I have used it for the last 3 or 4 years. It works good, though if the connection is slow turn off the camera. Headphones with a microphone work better then a camera with a built in microphone for capturing voice. Don't worry about getting the biggest resolution camera, it is doubtful that the people you are talking to are going to have a fast enough connection to utilize it.

I use voice the most, but the camera is good for sharing with people and showing things to friends / family.

When talking oversees and with poor connections, sometimes there is lag in the system. Sometimes like 7 seconds are more. It makes of interesting conversation when you don't know that it is there yet.

If you are going to be talking to people that have wireless in their house, but they are able to connect a cable to their modem, I would suggest they do that for using skype. It can be much cleaner and clearer.

Besides that enjoy it. It is a great tool to use. I use it pretty much everyday, twice a day. It sure beats using the mail!!;)

The reason that I asked is, I keep loosing my video call icon. Need to reinstall, then it works. Father in law was having the same problem. Maybe its my computer. Any help.

what type of video device are you using? Did you install the drivers? Normally if you don't see the video icon it is because skype does not see your video device. Sometimes you can just call and then you can select the option later. Also, verify your settings under options. Sometimes it will default to something else. Note it is probably best to have all your things (microphone and camera) plugged in before you start.

I have notice that when switching devices, skype is pretty good about recognizing what you have and what you are using, but every once in a while I have to make the changes manually.

I hope some of this helps..

Logitech camera with mic built in. This is a desk top, so I never remove the camera. I don't Skype on my laptop. I am sure its something dumb that I am doing. Been playing with this for a long time. The video and sound work great with someone on a broadband system. One friend has a Sat dish Internet, this does not work very well. Bad delay. More info please. You and I are actually getting along this time. This is Good. Speaking to Ruffy.

Lag is a function of connection speed, nothing else. Since you are transferring to and from both computers, the connections speed will be what the slowest connection is, regardless if you are on a T1 line. If video starts lagging bad, causing the voice to lag, turn off the video...

As to your video button disappearing, can you explain more about when it happens?

1)Is it during a video call?
2)I assume you are using the built in mic only and you do not have any other mic device?
3)When the video call button is gone, are you still able to make skype calls and people are still able to hear you? (Don't just go by the green call button, actually test it out if they can hear you)
4)Does your camera have a status light on it when it is being used? (You might be able to correlate when status light is on and video call button is present, vs light off and button being missing.
5)When the video call button is missing, if you go under tools - options - audio settings, what is your device for the microphone? (Note if you click on the advanced settings, you can remove some devices that you don't want it to use (only should be showing your camera / mic for the microphone selection.
6) When the video call button is missing, if you go to my computer and click on the camera (should be there, it is on mine anyways) does the camera start working then?

Please answer as many if not all these questions. We are trying to determine if it is a skype issue, or a camera issue, or both.

Coolio..

Coolio..

1) No. Only on start up. 2) No on the built in mic. Only the logiteh camera with built in mic. Also I never Skype on the laptop. 3) Yes. 4) Yes, No light on because of no video icon. 5) I did this. The video Word is Dithered. You cannot click on it. Been their done that. 6) Did not try that one. Will keep this in mind. Thank you.

It just happened, No video call Icon. Went to my comp. found my camera clicked on it. Camera came on I could see myself but it did not work on Skype. I will reinstall Skype then it will work.

Good link superjag. Looks like disabling the "start skype upon startup" might solve the issue.
