Skid plate/ motor enclosure materials.

Yea header wrap over the pipe. Also a 1/8" x 3/4" aluminum strap all the way over the pipe kind of like a pipe heat shield. Then put a couple layers of heat reflective tape on the back side of the cover near the pipe. Used a heat gun to form it. Works really good. Also made rad covers out of the same plastic that just slip in behind the plastic louvers, just cut to size, heated and bent a 90 at the top. Slip in and out real easy and small enough to put in your pack or whatever. Really though you need to run a temp gauge if you are gona go this far with a cover and block the rads cuz it will overheat on a warm day or workin the bike hard in the trees or rippin down the trail wfo.

I used the thinner race car plastic that comes in the rolls. I used header wrap and heat tape on the inside of the exhaust side panel. I also wanted to change oil without removing the shields so I remove the bolts and drop the skid plate. I also built a tunnel out of plastic on the front part of the skid to keep the track from throwing snow into the airbox and on the back of the engine.

Yup I too put a hole in the skid plate to drop the oil and also put a hole in the side so I can see the oil sight glass just for reassurance. Also I doubled up the bottom "skid plate" just for a little extra protection.

By the way mx, that is a slick lookin bike you have there!! Might be easy to get lost tho especially on a flat lit day. Lol. I like it tho!

What I have found is figure the width you want and go to Walmart, home depot ect. And look in there plastic storage bin area or plastic garbage cans. Cut bottom out and have nice rounded sides, looks professional, different colors, and about 4-5 bucks to boot.

Some entrepreneur needs to build a soft, waterproof, insulated bag of sorts that you could strap on and off easily.... that abs looks like a lot of time and effort to make, and to take on and off for maintenance. That being said, you guys all have your thinking caps on, and the results seem to be good!

Had exactly what you are talking about on mine. It strapped/clipped on in several spots. The guy who had my machine before me had a shop in Williston nd make it for him. Like a weather front on a truck type material. It worked real good for sure. No complaints on how it worked, just wasn't a fan of the way it looked and wanted to take a crack at making something different. Plus the material used was super tough as far as tarps go but that being said was getting tore up from trees and everything else I rub on/run into.

If designed rite the plastic ones come off easy enough for maintenance. Mine comes off with 5 or so bolts on each side.

Put mine on with quick plastic clips , takes 30 seconds a side to pull off. I do like the idea of a fabric clip system but trees probably destroy it in no time

Here is my feeble attempt at molding plastic. I used the race car plastic (1/8" thick) and molded it with a torch. The exhaust pipe has a carbon fiber heat shield and seems to keep the plastic from getting warm at all. The only heat I could feel was from a radiator hose that was touching the plastic. If it doesn't work out I have enough material left over to make two more.

I used stock car plastic. It comes in 2' x 10' rolls for $20, it comes in lots of colors as well! I'm in Great Falls, MT, if you can't find any at race car shops up there that have it, let me know and I can tell you where to find it here.

Yes, please let me know....I can't find anything offering stock car plastics in the Spokane, WA area. If you have a number for them that'd be helpful.

Just got some 1/8" UHM?(can't remember the rt name) Black Plastic. They have smaller pieces on the scraps shelf. Save a few bucks over buying a half sheet. I went in last week and got a bunch, they will know what you need.
