Ski question

As I am a newbie to the Mountain Horse I have a question. I recall seeing a thread last year regarding using a Curve X ski for snow bikes. Does anyone recall what the verdict was on this ski? Is it any good? Is the new 10" Simmons the best choice? I suspect that snow conditions have an impact on handling, what about ski choice?

Any info is appreciated.

Cheers

68 views, but

So 68 views since I posted this yesterday, yet no reply's! I must preclude that the Curve X ski is not popular then, or at least no one this forum has tried it. Most interesting indeed.

I wish I could remember where I read that review from last year. As I recall, the writer had claimed that the Curve X ski eliminated any darting on the trail, yet was great in the POW??

Sled guys are always testing/trying new or different ski's, seems to be not so with the Snow Bike group. Perhaps you already have the best ski available??

I've tried the Curve X or XS or whatever it's called. It does eliminate darting on the trail. It works awesome in a straight line down a trail. If you lean too far in a corner though, it will wash out.

The Curve ski did not work for me off trail, it washed out and could not be trusted.

IMO the 10 Timbersled ski is worth it, even at $425. If you can't justify that price go for a standard 6" simmons. I would imagine that you'll be able to pick up a used one for next to nothing.

I am running the C&A MTX ski on my 3 pre production bikes this year, I had really good results with the standard c&a skis last year, so i stuck with them. the center keel is very important for trail ride ability, I am running the stud boy deuce dual carbide to reduce darting on icy trails, the 8" wide profile of the ski is better for deep snow but not as good as the 10" wide timbersled. the MTX has side edges for added side hilling and cornering but I feel like it might not be quite enough, so adding carbides or pieces of metal might be what I do, but I am waiting to try it. I feel that the ski will be a great all around ski, more geared toward the riders that will ride some trails and some off trail, its wide enough to float on top of the snow and it will handle well on the trail, and it is very affordable. I dont think it is by any means better than the timbersled ski, that thing is awesome and alot of R&D went into designing it just for snow bikes, but it is a very good alternative!

I am a C&A Pro dealer I can sell you one ski with a carbide and mount kit for $275, or just a ski for $200 I have a few black skis in stock now, colored skis are available but it would help if two were ordered since I have to order them by the pair. PM me for more info

I cannot say enough about the 10" Timbersled ski with the optional dual runner center carbide that TS sells. It covers me in all conditions and is very reliable down the trail. 5th gear, wide open, one handed with confidence. Just replace the worn center carbide each season and call it done. It is a substantial upgrade over the stock 6" TS ski and completes the total snowbike package.

Can anyone tell me if the dual runner wear bar for the Timbersled ski will have carbide. Sure doesn't look like it in the pics. A couple road crossings and that thing will be worn. For $100 bucks it better.

They do not have carbide on them. We tested that and they are to fragile and the carbide would brake off the skag. It was not a thick enough of a surface for it to be beefy enough. The one that we are making this year that will come on the kits are made of heat treated tool steel. They are supper hard. Not quite as hard as carbide but close. The one that you have seen from last year were made of steel tubing with a powdered metal hard face welded on top. They worked good until the hard face wears off. If you order one for a replacement it will be the tool steel model.

Thanks

Thanks for the feed back. I was in Calgary this last weekend and stopped out to see Corrie at Brewster West, the Mountain Horse dealer for the Calgary area. He showed me several ski options and skag options as well. Corrie has tried most all of the available ski's and has worked with TS on developing the new MH 10" ski that is now standard n their kits.

After spending a few hours at Corries shop I have aclear understanding on what I will be ordering and using.

Thanks again for all the feed back.

Can't wait to get the bike built.

Cheers
