SKI IRON ?

last couple or rides typical spring conditions with concrete at the truck, hard crusty snow at intermediate elevations around 6000ft, then new snow up high, then 5 in the afternoon riding out on lots of wet corn snow...... and a few dirt stretch's.

Seems to me the half pipe center skeg I'm running is just tooo much iron in the snow, in the breaking crust it takes just too much hp to push that thing through the chit. steep climbs with ski unweighted its no bad, but downhills, run down a road, drag drag . Digs in the dirt like an anchor...........wow!

Thinking of tossing it in the corner tomarrow and running old stock center skeg for spring conditions.

Anyone tried that ?

sounds like a good idea to me. I was even thinking try a special "dirtski" without iron at all, when u get to snow put on good ski. only ski bolt to deal with pretty easy. I have done the front tire thing, but that is a pain cuz you need to make sure your forks a re shimmed properly and all, and around here the rangers have a real problem with using a tire, they like to write tickets for using a wheeled vehicle on a snow trail even with no snow, that's a whole nother debate though...

I got one of the triple carbides for spring conditions just mounted it up yesterday and will be of to Arcticman tomorrow.

There are lots of gravel patches around the parking lot there, just could not see me with the dual runner getting around there at all.

Will report back with results.

no kidding

a little off the thread subject, but hey dirtrebel I never heard of any official so dysfunctional as to ticket a tired( rubber tire somewhere ) overthesnowvehicle, wow thats funny. Sorry to hear you have to put up with that stuff. Amazing. Last time I read the Montana definition of over the snow vehicle it has no reference to tires ?

yeah it is unfortunate, I see the point about standard wheeled vehicles on groomed trails, 4 wheelers, trucks, they get stuck and rut it up. But using a tire to get up the dirt to snow should be ok by common sense, even if the trail is closed to wheeled vehicles being that you are on a snowmobile temporarily using a wheel, but give a guy a badge.... the definition of over snow vehicle on the gallatin national forest is under 50 inches in width and runs on 1 or 2 tracks and uses a ski or skis for steering. A tire in place of a ski temporarily is illegal it's stupid. and they have a vendetta here's a couple articles. If the trail is closed to wheeled vehicles and u are using a wheel motorized or non u are f'd. I will just try not to get caught! I might have to move further out into the boonies, or at least somewhere where nobody cares!

thanks dirtrebel

read those links. I'm out of touch. so ranger doug is making new rules. oops

I feel for the fat tire guys, total crap. Yeah I don't like the atvutvtvorvsuv guys getting stuck on my favorite sled trail, but mtn bikes ?

sounds like a timber cruiser trying to rewrite websters dictionary, man out of his element.

I'd say if they want to pay for a trail pass the same as a snowmobiler does then maybe they could ride it, maybe. But they should also consider the reason the trails are there in the first place.

I didn't care for his comment "I think we need to just step back and think about the environment. Like, let's talk about impact, not user groups."

Where is he going with that?

retro fit

stock newski skag for the day today. took off the 1/2 pipe, back to stock.

4 miles of concrete trail, stock skeg ok for handling, takes noticeably less power to push it up the trail. retro skeg good

off trail breaking crust with 1.3" new fuzz, ok .............on some steeeep side hills the old skeg tends to wash out easier than 1/2 pipe. but again, like on the trail, whole operation glides along with less throttle...........that's good, handling good.

finally afternoon mush, just love the chit, softer riding and easier on my arms, horsepower sucking but fun, stock skeg good, fun and more fun in the sun, and less hp to push the ski around.

SO, going back to day all good.

By the way, SOUTH FORK OF THE SKALKAHO South Bitterroot valley, 4 of us, two other nice folks off sixpack, hard to believe 6 people have that many millions of acres of riding and nobody/nada/ actually spooky. 20 years ago on a sunny april sunday place could be a zoo, don't figure.

I have found the single carbide harder to control on the trail, way more darty. The tunnel runner tracks straighter but agree, it robs hp and can get hung up easier (especially in the parking lot - got stuck, embarrassing!). I haven't gone over the bars yet because of it but can see it coming. It also is more difficult to turn in all conditions. I think a triple carbide is something I will try next. So far everyone likes it.

Here is my comment on the other carbide tread.

Just coming home from Arctic mann and rode the bike with the triple carbide on in all conditions imaginable works as advertised on set up -- easy on the steering does not hang up on anything -- awesome one Ice patches and still good on packed trails darts a bit more compared to the u runner but way better than the stock carbide . There is definitely less drag in all conditions for me this one stays on by far the best all around.
As soon as the make the side once available I will get triples for them as well.
If not I will build my own they make way to much sense.

I never did take a pick , but they are made to fit right on the timbersled ski straight bolt on using the existing holes.

Snowbikekits.com sells them for the snow bikes specifically .

straight up

two of us riding about 70 miles today and mush all afternoon, stock carbide, worked great, 6pm run to the truck, in the mush all good, 5th gear, atv tracks last 3 miles, rail right on through, with half pipe two weekago same conditons, too much drag, some dirt sections today and smoke right across them. Glad I made the swith for spring riding.
