My buddy is looking to buy a Ski Doo Summit probably 2008+, 146" or 154" 800. What problems do specific years have that he should know about or what years should stay away from or lean towards. Pros and Cons of years would be helpful in making a knowledgeable decision not an impulse purchase that could bite him later.

Thanks for all related input.

Check to make sure the driver update was done. check compression and ask if he has updated pistons or not. That sled also had some issues with the belt getting too hot and shredding but proper clutching should solve that issue. You can get the correct setup from either Dynamo Joe or Roosterbuilt. They are equal and both have a spectacular product. That being said, the Doo 166 belt will work fine with the correct clutch setup but the 377 is a better belt but spendy (all belts are now days). Get a vent kit and put it on. That is your choice also as there are now at least a dozen companies that make vents. I personally like the jtpanels.com vents. They are touch and look nice. The toughest ones out there, IMO.

There have been improvements every year.....so depending on his budget, as new as possible. If $$ allows, '09 or newer to avoid the little problems of the '08, and '10 or newer to get the refinements and the better suspension geometry.

800 crank failures

There have been a few sleds experiencing bottom end failures, if the sled still has the original engine but has went through a few belts it is suggested to remove the drive clutch and the small backing plate that covers the seal, (4 small hex head screws) belt dust gets in there and causes premature crank failure when the dust eats out the seal and allows the fancy white bearing grease to slowly leak out unnoticed.

P.S. Have the primary and secondary hardened rollers checked as well, they like to fail after a thousand miles or so if driven hard in the mountains.
