Single axle enclosed?

I have the opportunity to purchase an enclosed Wells Cargo enclosed trailer. The thing looks great, and already has some shelfs and a few other nice things installed. The only thing that has me worried is the fact that it is a single axle. The trailer would easily hold two new long track sleds and maybe three if the they were smaller. This is a 10 year old trailer in great shape for $2800. I thought the guy told me it was a 5000lb axle. Does that sound right, and do you guys think a single axle with three sleds would be too much weight? Thanks all!

There should be a sticker on the trailer that tells you the max gross weight and unloaded weight (and/or payload). If it's gone, I'd question if it's really a 5000lb axle. If it has trailer brakes, which is usually an option for a single axle trailer, it would handle the weight better in adverse conditions. I'm no expert on trailers, but that seems like a lot of weight for a one axle enclosed trailer.

Might try calling Wells Cargo and see what they think ..

new info

SInce I posted this, I got to look at the trailer a little better and did a little research myself. The axle is a 5500 lb. axle and it does have brakes. A little strange, but this is a heavier axle than what Wells Cargo uses for the two axle trailers (with two they do not need to be as heavy). Thanks for the reply.

If anybody has any towing experience with a single axle and around 5000 lbs. please post up and let me know what you think. Thanks!

What it's rated for and what you'll have in it are two different things.

What does the trailer weigh?

Personally, I'd want two axles on a trailer like that. It'll ride so much better and be easier on tires.

I've had boats for 20 years that had single axle trailers that weighed 4-5k with boat and trailer together with no issues at all. I wouldn't hesitate to own one with a single axle.

3 sleds arent going to ever way 5000lbs, even a yamaha. I know cause I have 1, haha. For the price, you cant go wrong. In couple yrs, it will still be worth 2500ish. Can always upraded down the road. Not sure how 3 sleds will fit in, guess depends on the length. Likely nose to tail to nose.

Thanks guys!

I ended up buying the trailer, and three sleds are alright, but definitely 3 quads or many bikes! I am pretty excited, and for around $2k, I think I will be alright. Thanks for the replies.
