I've got a BCA tour shovel and I find it difficult to use as it's so short. What's a better shovel that doesn't take up a ton of pack space?

I've got a polaris branded Voile (sp?). It's really a good shovel. Extendable "T" handle with a saw and nice metal scoop and smaller than my old sos shovel.

an extendable heat tempered aluminum shovel is ideal. i prefer a T handle for packing inside but a D handle digs better when chopping blocks. Voile makes a T-6 extendable shovel that is nice. brooks range also has a build your own that is heat tempered.

Check your probe as well. if you had a BCA that fit in the handle of your shovel (6' long, flimsy and thin), consider replacing it with something 280cm minimum and stout. 300-320cm is preferred w/ graduated length markings.

X2 on that Voile T6 Telepro being a good shovel. I prefer the D-ring handle over the T handle any day. I'm glad you brought up the tempered aluminum topic too. Just because a shovel is made of aluminum doesn't mean its going to hold up.
Edit: Don't forget, a broken shovel will kill your riding partner if they're burried.

BCA makes an extension for their shovels that fits inside the other handle , I have the extendable with saw on my BCA companion and I love it. The blade is a bit big but when and if I need it I want to move as much snow as fast as possible.:face-icon-small-hap Good luck with your seach, hopfully all you ever need it for is digging a stuck sled out the long shovel works great when your seat is down by your feet!!!
