Should I be scared?

Hey all - looking at a sled, a 2000 Summit 700.

It grenaded a piston last year.

A top-end was done, but the bottom end was not cracked open to clean debris out/rebuild the crank.

Should I pass on it? On a 2t dirtbike, no way - I'd run away from it.

Are snowmobiles somehow different?

Thanks!

Same principle applies ... On a 2t dirtbike, no way - run away from it

UNLESS the sled is priced with an engine tear down to clean repair inspect.

I know a couple guys who did their "Rebuild" this way and actually had great luck.
But I emphasize the word LUCK here.
As Don said, if the price is way reasonable and you can tear it down to inspect and clean it, replace the bearings and seals then by all means do it.
The 2000 700 was a great sled. I had one and loved it.

Don't the pistons have two rings on them? If part of the top ring blows off, I'd guess it can't get past the second ring and will get blown out the exhaust instead of falling into the bottom end.
I think in that scenario, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

yeah, about that logic, no theres no room for a chunk of ring to even fit in between the piston and the cylinder, they just rape the cylinders, and usually pop the ring out then they hook ports and it goes down REALLY quickly, i have a few sets of pistons to back it up to! if the crank is rebuilt, i dont know, shure try it if the price is right, if not, its sorta risky.

OK, thanks for the input. That makes the decision easier - I want the sled for a number of other reasons, but the #1 priority is _reliable_. I want to stack the odds as much in my favor as possible WRT reliability (I am realistic, I know what I'm getting into).

So, yeah. Thanks!

Buy a Summit 670X, and have your mechanic friend go through the entire engine for complete reliability. ;):beer;:D

If you can get the 700 for $750 then RUN and THROW the money at him.
For that price you could go through the motor completely and have an awesome sled. I loved mine!

What do you think a fair price would be for a 98 670x (the 700 is gone) in the same condition? I'm not opposed to buying it & doing the work, but the price has to be right.

Leave it to me to find two of them.

I see good running, low mileage 670x's for sale here in salt lake in the $1500 range. I wouldnt pay more than a couple hundred bucks for one that needs a motor.

OK. I was thinking $750 is reasonable - probably cost about $1k to do the motor, plus $750, $1750, plus $250 in incidentals - random this, plug, plastic bits, etc etc etc.

Fits my budget of $2k, but I'd rather find a Summit 670x with low miles in decent shape for $1500. I'm not afraid of the work, I'd just rather not DO it.

Thanks for all the input - this is a very helpful forum!

I'll offer your friend $1001!

I just had ANOTHER sled sold out from under me. Next sled I like, I'm going to go camp out at the *(&#$&'s house and throw rolls of quarters at him until he caves.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr. I hate buying stuff.
