Shocks

The shocks on the timbersleds are junk. We have broke two so far this season. They have a great product that's works like to actually see some of their parts they put on them last. Sick of always working on these things and replacing parts.

What ? Are you kidding me ? Those Fox are the best shocks ever made, NOT ! Im with you on this ! Put something decent on the Mountain Horse for 2014 ! Fox is garbage ! It all started with those junky floats !! Go Zbros :cheer2:

Wow I got almost 2 seasons on the coils and no problems ,so why do you think there junk ,maybe look at riders weight landing on concrete snow falling from a five story cornis .

At least they rhym with

Maybe it's the beefcake, or the springs!

The bikes need to be sprung to the rider and their ability with wheels so if someone were to start experimenting he could put a sock in this problem.

Sacrificing deep snow performance a little will be the drawback as softer suspension absorbs the energy sooner, compacting softer snow beneath.

Hawks especially 600/800's have the opposite problem, heavy springs blow you unless your too big or going!:face-icon-small-blu

still shock'n

the hawk shocks were industrial, calibrated for ? just off the shelf, can be made to work.

the new fox coil overs are a different fox construction from their earlier shocks, instead of screwed together and service friendly, now snap rings and plastic, can be calibrated as good as any, but certianly have the potential to fall apart, and sounds like some have.

the new shocks require special looooong needle to gas up............very odd and frustrating up through the bottom of the lower cap requiring pressing out the bottom bushing just to adjust gas pressure, takes away a tuning variable.

they also need 350 psi ,the higher presssure likely required to keep top cap aginst snap ring retainer on big hits, again removing another shock tuning variable.

I am a fox fan after servicing shocks for 35 years or so, but in my opinion not their best effort.

so what can you put that is better? What happened to warranty? Kinda worries me a broken shock can make a long trip home. What does timbersled said about this?

OEM, POS, WCares!

I don't even like their gear!:face-icon-small-win

The 503 uses much heavier progressive coils with overload or second stage sled like stubby torsion coils to take the hits. 15" of travel is hard to reach for the same gas charged BRP-Matics so ADB raised their bottom mount and angled it to adjust to it's shortcomings. In the game of snow cross this still was not enough to take the hits the 503F test riders were giving while handing the sleds their a$$. The 04' 600 like the one for sale in the Snow Hawk section came a little over prepared, a new design falling rate that sat taller still. That angle required a very loose track so when the three 300# coils were finally compressed the driver jack shaft bearings didn't commit suicide when Cailen and brian McCurdy came back down from flight school.

Those of us knee dragging or berm busting types can't even keep our feet on the pegs while riding the whoops, very little change when ADB softened the forward jackhammer to 280# in 05'. Scott Mitchek, he's the guy in the middle of the podium, fixed it by designing a drop down bracket to try to duplicate the superior original 503 skid, now the rider has a bigger hammer to hit back. Same shocks, same shocks that go in the front of a 15 year old trailing arm Ski-Doo, or the A-arms of a new XM, the rear skid of any of them over the past twenty years unless they are snow check fashion models duded up with gassy remote reservoirs. If I ever finish my kit, the design is based of the ExpertX the 503F and hundreds of thousands bought from Denny Boivin and put under their Twoski's almost fifteen years ago. Only to find out their new rear end was over ruling the front which they thought was fine prior. Alain created the rest and added a set of 46mm Paoli's to fit the spec. It's always the brother who don't want the spotlight that deserves it!

Stepping up.

Buffalowhawk replaced his 503's skid with the second gen as you can see the forward 280# in the bottom, being the old man he is inside he uses the brackets to mimic his Caddy's ride he stores for going down to Flarida!

He's retired from the Hawk these days, even paid a buyer to take the old bird off his hands, as you noticed he's horsing around now.

Had he bought the FOX R. remote reservoir snow cross specific OEM ADB Snow Hawk racing shocks for his original swing arm, he would still care.:face-icon-small-sad

Why not just have a set of Ohlins custome built...??? I know they are not big in the snow world but I have yet to figure out why. All my motorcycles have Ohlins front and rear. My personal MH will be the same way next year.

$hit the bed!

My BMW R1150GS paid over 2grand for her 2, over 80K and no re design, Twomoto's downfall had to do with those figures, along with a certain GM Blaser at the helm.

Better shocks don't save overloaded, don't you get it? You shape Titanium into silly putts, the big O don't custom order, they serve em up to those that qualify.

The guys who pansy around on Beemers like mine even add side cars to slow them down, then when the gold bars break in half they ASSume thier bad to the bike.

no need

no need to over react. 10 brands of gas shocks that will hold up fine, including old fox.

Good suspension is testing and tuning, brand and parts are not really critical, just some good parts and one suspension expert with time and a gifted test rider............no memory.

Only sort of fair suspension has ever been offered for sale.

Busted

Busted front shock apart on TS kit today. Hope they get this fixed up. Overall had a great trip.

If anyone is interested in Ohlins let me know. I am working right now with Ohlins building some shocks for my bike. They do custom build if you know who to talk to. The shock on my supermoto is a hodgepoge of ohlins parts from snowmobile to roadrace all put together for a dirt bike and custom valved for me. I should have a final price on the ohlins for snowbikes in a week or less. Pm me for info.

What year kit? My front shock on 14 kit doesn't have the bump stop. This may have been causing shock damage. Maybe someone can confirm this. Rear shock still has bump stop. Do you know what broke on shock yet?

I might as well ask, has anyone figured out how to discharge and recharge these Fox shox? The standard fox nitrogen needle isn't long enough to go through the eye and into the rubber.. I'd like to stiffen up my front shock, and I generally do all my own shocks, but my conventional tools in this case aren't working.

Thanks,

Jon

last year I revalved and rebuilt several MH supsensions with the fox spring shocks as per the 2013. I had to buy a special needle to gas the shocks up through the bottom, I must say a very silly idea, first call to fox they had no needles or idea where to get them. I made the first needle by making a needle extension with aluminum tube with expoxyied needle, that will work for doing a shock or two.

The two customers that didn't want to fool with the possibility of shock failure, we bought used fox shocks off e bay, put in a slightly ligher MTHorse shim stack and put together their shocks with older style screw together shocks ( Arctic cat ) with Schrader valves, they could fill/adjust on the fly. reliability issue put to bed.

Building my own shocks for my homebuilt kit, used M8 suspension with stock AC/Fox coil overs, 185lb rear spring 120lb front ( AFCO RACE CAR SPRINGS can be bought in 10lb increments from about 80lbs up to 400 lbs ), 200psi nitrogen, 2013 M8 valving surprisingly good. I have it adjusted a little on soft side, seems to hook and go through the snow better even if a little soft for big bumps.
