shipping container garage?

recently heard about people buying used shipping containers to use for storage, and I was thinking it might be a good inexpensive storage option for my 2 sleds! Anyone have any experience with using shipping containers for storage, or have any photos of modifications you've made? This site has a small gallery: http://www.seabox.com/gallery/workshop/

Never had one personally, but have used them for work in construction... they seem to be pretty secure.:beer;

seen one before, trusses between 2, cut doors into the side ones inside, a end wall and a overhead door on the other, they even poured a floor, don't remeber what he used for heat

They are excellent. Beat up ones sell for $1000 - $2000 each.

Are you gonna stack them or put them in the snow?

was planning on just putting one 40 footer on the ground, the snow doesn't get all that deep at the elevation of my house. Considering raising it on blocks if it helps keep the floor from rusting out though.

good idea

we use them for storage at work and have had no problems at all with snow piled on them. (ships stack em pretty high. Set it off the ground would help protect the floor)
If you get one with a double handle on each door, I'd cut the outer locking bar off. It makes it more secure for shipping but they are a royal pain to close and latch.

they had a show building houses out of these containers. they used quite a few of them. around here, they cost about 4000 delivered. i would lean to doing up an actual garage before doing a couple of them.

I wanted one too, but the wife said "No, too, ugly" And she has half the money and all the pu$$y so I didn't get one!

We have a lot of storage units and containers we rent these out to people on our site.. we also have rented them to contruction sites as well.. They may not be the prettiest but they work..

The beat up ones for 1000 bux are 50/50 may leak. Be sure and take a close look. I checked into these a few years ago and they are a good way to get cheap storage. Also there was a show on last weekend on the DIY about how to modify these into homes and other things. Was a pretty good show, they were stacking and welding them making 5000 square foot homes.

Around here you can get good shape ones painted any color you want and delivered for 2K. My dad just got one and is putting a roof and like covered parking to the sides of it for his tractor/atvs, etc. I'll see if I can get a pic for ya.

Have one, excellent secure storage. Go for a 9'6" highboy if you can find it. More storage and usually about the same price. Be aware they are air tight so when you leave wet stuff inside the moisture can't get out. Ventilation is necessary. Good luck.

Put siding around it and a deck on top for barbecue. You can stack straw around them for insulation.

I lot of guys have them here in AK and they just put them inside of a hill with just the door showing and they work out great, I also have a buddy that has a 20' at his house for extra storage and he just put siding on it to match his house and painted it. Looks good and is almost bomb proof

Be warned... once you get one, you will want another, and another, and then they will be filled with tons of crap you should have thrown away... They do work good though, pops has 2 and 2 boxes off of a box truck, neighbor has 4 scattered and filled with tons of crap. Boxes off of trucks work well too, especially if you just want the truck frame and not the box. Did a dump conversion to the box truck and it worked out good.....

Definitely want it raised off of the ground.... not sure if blocks would work. We dug a big hole and filled it with gravel for a pad (was rich black dirt and it would just sink, then used some large beams to get it up. Old man ran electric to it for lights, and put a left over / junk / salvage little door on the other end. Looks pretty good. Those things are bad for treasure / garbage collectors. Obviously depends on whose stuff it is though! ha ha

misc rant jibberish

we have one and have shelves and alot of storage in them nothing in them gets wet dont have to worrie about mice and other critters. i saw one up by where i live a 40 footer that wasconverted in to a shop. had a stove, lights power, air. it was pretty sweet

Here in western ND you have to pay property tax on these. I had a friend that bought a semi-trailer for storage. He wanted to take the wheels and axles off and drop it on the ground. He was informed that his property taxes would go up. He dug a hole and backed the trailer into the hole and guess what, no property tax increase.LOL

gotta love finding a way around paying bloody taxes. that's awesome.lol

My brother got one, I think it's about 60' long? He insulated it, put electricity and a heater in it and works in there all winter. Very tight, water proof, mouse proof, and pretty warm. Put down a concrete slab for a ramp up to it and made a nice extra shop.
