shipping a motor

I'm going to be shipping a motor this week. What is the best way to package it? We use coolers to ship bike motors. What carrier will have the best rates for this also?

I shipped a motor to Alaska once and just built a box for it out of plywood for top and bottom and 1x2's for a few places on the sides for extra strength. Then I screwed everything together, mounting the motor to the bottom piece of plywood with 4 bolts, wrapped everything in cardboard, and then raised the bottom plywood piece off the ground with a 2x4 frame for extra strength and to keep the bolts off the ground. I got a large heavy plastic sack to cover the motor and filled the remaining space with packaging peanuts and a couple old pillows I had. The guy said it made it there just fine. I went with ups, didn't check other places for the best rate since the guy buying it paid for shipping.

I once sold to a guy in alaska, I put the motor in brown box then wrap in tape all over so it will not break through.I could put plywood sheets in it but the postal office told me about weight limit... Lucky I weighted in and it was about a lbs less than over limit.
UPS is very expensive.
He contacted me once he receive it, he said thanks, everything looks good!

Shipping motors to and from Ak I've always used coolers as well. They work great. Probably crack the inside of it so use an old cooler or a cheap one and consider it disposable.

As to rates, they suck going to and from Ak! You guys in the states have the option of FedEx or Ups ground. Ground rates to/from here are almost as much as 2nd day air. The only thing I miss about my Fedex job is the 75% discount on shipping. :face-icon-small-dis

Exactly what I did once. About as close as one can get to 100% mark of damage free shipping. I didn't cheap out on shipper either. UPS ground with insurance. Don't like headaches.

I live in the AK and have received engines in almost all forms from cardboard boxes when shipped un-assembled. A wood crate when sent whole by UPS and in a rubbermaid tote, also assembled. In my opinion, when packed well inside the Rubbermaid tote was without a doubt the cheapest and shipped very well, came USPS. Wrap it with foam or whatever is handy to limit movement, as you can count on the handlers throwing it about on it's trip from point A to point B.
