A young man is dead after his snowmobile went through the ice in the harbour of a northeastern Newfoundland community Saturday night.
A call for assistance at La Scie came in around 10 p.m., RCMP said.
Emergency officials were dispatched to the area and local residents were able to haul the man, 29, out of the water.
However, lifesaving measures proved unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they believe the driver was not aware that ice conditions in the La Scie harbour had changed drastically in the preceding 24 hours.
The harbour ice had been solid but broke into loose pans on Saturday.
Alcohol is also believed to have been a factor in the accident, the RCMP said.
The man's name has not been released at the request of his family.
