Selling a sled in WA, Procedures

After tearing two houses up looking for Titles my wife called the licensing lady to find-out there is no title.

Since it was not registered and the guy thought I was trying to screw him, we went into the licensing place and signed a bill of sale there and he paid for the new registration and tax!!! ~9.5% thank you very much!

Anyway I have another one and about to sell it… what if I registered it for the $45 and did a bill of sales, 2 copies (one for me and one for him) of sale to the guy giving me the cash and reported it within the 5 days (online dol).

Does he have to go and reregister and pay tax, or do it the next year???

Just give them the registration and a bill of sale they take it to a licensing agent and transfers sled to there name and if your nice you'll put a lower price on B.O.S. so the taxes will be less for them being that the sled has been taxed how times already.

You pay sales tax either way, based on the bill of sale price. I just did one this weekend and if you don't have the registration you have to have a "rubbing" of the VIN from the sled. Even on my renewal I had to do this, since I couldn't find my renewal or registration from last year.

This is all true and accurate, to the best of my knowledge:face-icon-small-win

I've registered or sold about four sleds in the last three seasons and I agree that, because there are no title fo sleds in WA, you just send the buyer off with a POS I mean BOS and most recent registration. I've never reported the sale to the DOL. Odd to me because back in Ohio and Michigan sleds have titles like cars or motorcycles do.

Yeah Washington's government is one screwed up mess... That said, Snowmobiles have no title and some DOL outlets (privatized in this state) will charge you tax based on the NADA listed value, BOS or not. Oh, don't forget to get your sno-park pass because you paid for it by registreing it.

there's a form you can have filled out by the seller...basically an affidavid...and they are satisfied with that. Done it with a couple things, one of which was a harley I got for $800...ran out of gas with the little tank 3 times and sold it for $2400....

Just make sure you go to a Sub-Licensing agency (AKA Not the state ran) So you can avoid any hassles at all. The licensing subs (Like cascade licensing here in Yakima) don't give 2 ****s about looking up the book value or you having the "Official bill of sale" just quick and no hassles.

I bought my 04 escape and my buddy gifted it to me and we are not related. Fed Way dmv didn't say anything .....I think the law is that you have to be related but they didn't even ask. Say he's you cousin. That is BS paying tax everytime something get's sold. :face-icon-small-dis

The real deal (to my suprise)!

I to just aquired a sled (04 Escape also, what a coincidence) from a friend of mine. He lost the registration so he wrote out a bill of sale on a piece of notebook paper stating he was "gifting" the sled to me, the sled was already in my possesion so he couldn't even write in the VIN on the BOS. Signed it and handed it to me. This was like last May so I finally got around to licensing it and trying to transfer the registration. I filled in the blank for the VIN and took it to the COUNTY COURTHOUSE. If you go to the courthouse you avoid additional fees and I figured if this was going to happen it would be there. The lady ran the VIN, it come up legit and registered to my buddy. I paid the registration fee and maybe a small filing fee and that's it! No problem.
It is now my understanding that you can "gift" a sled ONE TIME only.

Gifting can only be done once on everything if I remember correctly, not just on snowmobiles. Like stated above the buyer will avoid paying tax if gifted. I think its total b.s. that a guy has to pay tax on something that has already been taxed when it was new, I say f#!% the state and government, they get enough of our money!

Gifting is non taxable in WA..it doesnt matter what the property is. You can even gift your house.

Now Yamaadog on a 800.00 harley! WTF..with a small tank..that must have been a sportster which we call harley mini bikes. I would have loved to have had a pic of Yamadog on a snortster..that would look like a monkey fornicating a foot ball!

snopark

When you license your sled each year the state includes a snopark permit. They used to be pretty free with them but now you only get one per sled, and they record the serial number to your name.
If this is new to you make sure you write in the plate # of the vehicle your pull your trailer with and place it on the lower left corner of your windsheild, and sign it. If you don't YOU WILL GET A TICKET!!

You should make certain that you notify the state DOL that you sold your sled within the 5 business days. This absolves you of liability.

If the buyer goes out and crashes the sled into somebody elses car or property (and then leaves the scene of the accident), then the courts go after the registered owner - YOU.

I had a near miss several years ago - I didn't think I was supposed to notify the DOL of the sled sale since there was no title - WRONG. The buyer crashed the sled. I found out through the grapevine that he never registered the sled in his name like he was supposed to. I was plain lucky nothing came back on me - from him or anyone else.

I have relatives in Michigan - that state does not have the "notice of sale" like we do in WA. It is a common problem to have a buyer crash a car... and the courts come after the last registered owner. The WA "notice of sale" is one very good regulation.
