Secondary clutch troubles

so me and my buddie are changing the track on his 03 pro x 440, and were about to take the secondary off to get the driveshaft off, we slid it about halfway and it quit sliding, we tried hitting it with a rubber mallet and we pulled as hard as we could but couldnt get it off. we managed to get the track on and everything but the next problem is gonna be getting the secondary back on, any advise on what to do?? thanks

Hmm. I'm guessing the key has wedged itself between the clutch and jackshaft. The jackshaft keyway has 'ramps' on each end, so if the key was stuck in the keyway of the clutch, it rode up the ramp in the jackshaft wedging everything tight.

Have you tried pushing it back the way it came? That might drop the key back into the keyway all the way. Then try some PB Blaster or something similar in hopes of breaking the key out of the clutch's keyway.

^^^^^^That Seem to be the only reason why it wont come off unless you have a splined shaf but still PB blaster would be my choice to bust it free, and ensure that you take it off to lube the shaft at least twice a season

some times you can take a very small steel punch and "tap" the key back twards the motor, but the pb blaster is a must do. Just carefully try moving the key off the keyway ramp area. I agree that the key is probably stuck in the keyway. You can also carefully warm the aluminium to let it expand a tad.
