search and rescue refusing free help?

what is it going to take? why is there not a list to add our number to when a search is needed. i know several experienced mountain riders willing to help with knowledge of the area and gps and spot units on board, yet only way to help is being a member of snowmobile club? when someone is missing the more help the better. lets not wait for a death before we get a system that actually works using all the available resources around instead of a select few. also how is it that we can spend thousands of dollars on a sled but cant spend a few hundred on a spot or similar device to aid in a emergency situation?

hcrider,

When did Search and Rescue refuse help?
We do provide a list of Riders willing to help out to the local Search and Rescue organization and Sheriffs office, but many of those riders are not members of the club. The club has been the organization that has taken the initiative to put the list together. Want to be on the list? PM me and we can talk. No there is not a set standard that we use to validate someone being on the list but the last thing needed is inexperienced riders adding to the confusion on the mountain.

Just what he said.. I was on the S&R back home and alot of poeple didnt understand why we put them down when they asked to help. Depending on the type if incident weather it be a search for a missing person or knowing the location and just rescuing someone......The biggest thing is you dont want 20 guys in your group and have to stop every 10 min to make sure everyone keeps up....You want a small group of knowledgable riders that knows the area very well, and who all have the same plan. Most of the time we would only have no more then 4 guys go out at night and mabey twice that durring the day. In the end the thing is that everyone is in somewhat of a panic state and the fewer the people the better.

Yeah there is a fine line there. The more people looking the better but the more people looking the more people that need to be kept track of besides the parties in need. More often than not you get more parties in trouble and have more rescues in the end than you start with.

Just my .02

I am a guide in the range on weekends, work night shift, so I cant make the meetings, and have only been called twice. I already talked to the sheriff's office, know the mountain better than almost everyone, growing up here and riding the range for 27 years, hunting and fishing up there since I was 8 years old with my dad who was an hp officer. If you need my help, you know how to get ahold of me guys!

Joe, I've also been called twice. The one time out of Albany when we met, and the one this Monday. IIRC that's the case with Hutch also.
